OK. The box showed up today. I have had a Police 4
in my hands for the first time ever. I set it in on the table next to a Military, as well as a Resilience. We will ignore the Reslience just to keep things simple. These are all first impressions based on just a few minutes fooling around.
The Police 4
is like a Military on a serious diet.
Side by side and folded up, they are essentially the same size, but the Police
is definitely slimmer and sleeker. It should be nicer to carry, not that I have had any issues with carrying the Military. And for people like me who grumble about wanting tip up carry, you have all the options with the Police
So, what took me so long?
As far as opening, I find the Military more "intuitive" -- it just falls in my hand and my thumb goes to the hole. But this is pretty subtle and may just be habit and muscle memory. Like any backlock knife, there is more friction and it doesn't fly open like the Military.
The lockup is solid, with a good crisp click as the knife locks open. Absolutely no play (would Sal settle for anything less?). It is a 4
.5 inch blade as compared to 4
.2 inches on the Military. The Police
uses thinner blade stock. It is a big knife, but given that I am used to the Military, the Police
really does not seem any bigger. It is not the Monster I thought it would be. It feels different in hand. The Military gives more to grab onto. The Police
is slimmer and smoother, but by no means insecure. The Police
has more metal in the handle, and you can feel that - the balance moves back to the hand and handle. Nothing bad about this to my mind, this is just one of those things that will have to see how it settles in for me over time.
And you can't ignore the K390 blade steel. It is pretty amazing that this steel is being used as the standard steel in a production knife rather than being available only in a sprint or exclusive.
So, in conclusion - it is a spectacular knife and I don't know why I waited so long. I had been thinking it was a monster that would become an albatross purchase that I would regret. I have been carrying a Military routinely, and I think this will be even more agreeable to carry. I'll have more to say after I have carried and used the knife some.
