I suspect that lock bar stiffness is directly proportional to the position of the spring in its channel, or the spring length, or its temper (how springy is the metal before it its shaped into the spring). Or all of the above.

Since some knives do not have overly strong lock bars, and some do, like mine, and the solution is to reposition the spring so that more of it is free of its holding channel in the back spacer, effectively reducing tension on the lock bar, it would seem that one or more of the above factors varies from batch to batch.

I guess some might be a bit worse than others. But it does break in. I can definitely tell it is easier to operate after a day. From the reviews i knew it could be an issue though. But i knew you can adjust the spring (how far it sticks out inside) to adjust the lock bar tension, so i wasn't too worried about buying one. But maybe i was lucky with mine being so smooth.
