Spyderco Folders converted into Fixed Blades question.

Postby SpyderEdgeForever » Fri Sep 14, 2018 9:25 pm

Have you ever looked at your favorite Spyderco knife and thought "This would be great in a fixed blade, instead of a folder."? I sure have. What do you all think of this? Would you like Spyderco to offer your favorite folder in a fixed blade form? Say a Military or Endura or Pacific Salt, with a fixed blade instead of a folder.

I understand Spyderco does not do custom work but how difficult would it be for someone who can modify knives to take a folder, unattach the blade, and reattach it in a fixed blade form?

I've had the thought before, but in the end I prefer seeing a fixed blade designed from the ground up.

There are a world of design restrictions that apply to folders, that fixed blades don't have to adhere to. Take advantage of it!

The Dragonfly, exactly the same dimensions but fixed.

Can't say I ever have. Folders are just so much more convenient to carry than fixed blades, my everyday knife usage doesn't include baton work or prying, and if I were ever to go deer hunting again I'd carry my Spyderco Moran Drop Point. OTOH, wouldn't mind seeing a full tang version of that Moran.

I can't tell you how many times that I've thought that a fixed blade Hawkbill would really be nice to have. And I would even be wanting something with a blade longer than the Spyderhawk.

Also I've had some thought about what the C-60 Ayoob would be like in a fixed blade with a larger/wider blade of course but I would probably want that one with teeth.

One of my biggest fantasies to convert a folder into a fixed blade would be to take the old Rhino Horned blade version of the Lil Temperance model and make it longer of course but the same width would be ideal>> I believe that a Rhino Horn Lil T would make one absolutely awesome fixed blade. The more I use my knives that have some belly on them the more I like them.

That's basically an ARK with a different blade shape.

I've repeatedly said here that I think the Manix 2 is a tremendous platform for a fixed blade design. I'd like to see more "sculpted" or maybe beefier scales to fill the hand for heavier (tight grip I mean) use a fixed blade might see and screwed-on scales for cleaning. I think it would a fantastic all-round outdoors knife that would appeal to campers, hunters, fishermen, etc.

In fact, I think a LW version basically as it is now with the FRN and then a more sculpted G10 version as mentioned would be very attractive offerings.

I would not want to "convert" a folder into a fixed blade, but there are some blade designs I would love to see incorporated into a fixed blade. Buck did this with the 110 Folding Hunter. Because of the demand, they made the 101 Hunter fixed blade. It is exactly the same in looks but is a full tang fixed blade.

Your wish has already been granted! The mule team blades are for all practical purposes, Manix 2 fixed blade designs.
And you can pick some up and either get busy making your own handles or buy them from any number of suppliers.
I think Halpern Titanium is one of the best choices.

Like you say, I find a small fixed blade like this to be a great design and quite useful.

Sorta. Mule's are similar but still quite a bit different. Also, they aren't, obviously, "plug and play".

And handle shape. ;) I totally see your point.
I have handled the ARK thinking along the same lines, but the dragonfly shape, as a whole, feels more comfortable for day to day use, to me.

Yeah, you're right. I've never handled a dragonfly so I just had the blade in mind. The Para 3 is as small as I'd like to go currently. Things could totally change if you know what I mean lol.
