What is Powder Metallurgy?

#1

Post by Larrin »

In this article I describe the process of powder metallurgy including:

How does powder metallurgy refine the microstructure of steel?
When was powder metallurgy invented and which company was the first to use it?
What were the early steels used with powder metallurgy and how were steels developed differently to take advantage of the technology?

Looking forward to reading this one Larrin.

My current existence is highly dependent on powder metallurgy (non-steel) and I'm always eager to read/learn more about the science and process!

Hey, Larrin: one thing I've been wondering is whether the heat and pressure of the isostatic pressing are sufficient to realign the grain in the metal, or whether each micro-ingot's outside edge is a grain boundary for all the steel inside it.

There are cast structures like dendrites in the powder form which include various boundaries. When it comes to the "grain direction" of the steel which is a somewhat misleading phrase since it doesn't even require grain boundaries, that is created through the forging and rolling which occurs after HIP.

So many things that I take for granted. It’s a good thing I’m writing it down.
