Unknown model spyderco

#1

Post by Roamfree926 »

Helping an older friend of ours prep his home for sale. We are digging through 70 years of diving, motorcross racing and martial arts equipment. Along the way we found this little guy.

He thinks he got it in the 90s.

Hi Roamfree,

Looks like a Calypso Jr that is very over sharpened.

It's a poor original Calypso Jr. (Micarta handles), obviously improper sharpened on a belt sander. :(

Or else a homemade wharncliffe?

I beg to differ on the poorly reshaped blade. If you look at it closely you can see the sharpened edge is fully constant and the turn into the lower edge of the blade is certainly machine precise. The edge depth is very regular and the bevel is matched. It shows no signs of being sharpened at all. No correction of the defects created by use.

Hi Roamfree,

It could be a re-shaped blade rather than just over-sharpened. Hard to tell from a photo. I can tell you, as the designer of the model, that it is not the origina blade shape.

With a little more grinding, on the spine, it could become an Alaskan-scale mosquito!

For a moment upon seeing the first picture, I thought it was a blade from a P'Kal in a different handle :)

Not too many mosquitoes around. Made them myself. For discouraging pick pockets.

Oh Sal, how I'd love to have a mosquito in my collection! Haha, I have many spyderco blades and I just love them all like family. No other knife maker comes close to touching spyderco in my humble opinion. My first was a Cara Cara and after that a Matriarch 2. Since then, any time I have the money for a new blade, it is spyderco all the way!

Yeah I would've guessed it's a mod too, rather than an oversharpening.

This thread is a year old and a dead topic. I think it would be better to start a new thread.
