I think this a great idea. Micarta, Carbon fiber or G 10 rounded with or without texture. Any steel except VG 10 (it’s fine, just don’t want any more). Jimping instead of a thumb ramp. Sharpening choil.

Sal, since you asked, IMHO, with all do respect, whatever you design, please, NO finger choil.

And if possible, make the blade start from the handle, or as close as possible. Think Bill Moran without the "choil".
just my humble opinion. when whittling or working with wood etc, I personally find the hand position awkward if there is a choil. Say Perrin Street bowie or Street Beat, love them both, but they don't "feel" right (for me) for such kind of edc use.
Think about a puukko. Perfect as it is, no need for a choil. You can use full 5 finger force of your grip if needed when using the knife, without the forefinger being in an weird position. Once again, thats just me, because I'm familiar with that kind of grip.

I don't own any Mules, always seem to miss out on the interesting (steelwise) ones, but i'd buy a longer blade mule with a "standard" steel anyday. Waiting for the Bow river like crazy.
A scaled down Temperance 2? the handle looks perfect.

I just want to say micarta. Micarta. Micarta. Micarta.

My suggestions:

1. Do away with the thumb ramp.
2. Put in a decently sized sharpening choil at the base of the blade.
3. Keep using new and exotic steels as much as possible. This is what would make it really appealing to me.

Love it! My only two suggestions were to do away with the thumb ramp (which is cramped for my thumb) and make the blade profile narrower. This is perfect imho. And I quite like the lanyard hole in that rendition.

Oh, I'd like to vote for no choils or sharpening notches. Sharpening notches can easily be added, but are very difficult and wasteful to remove. They catch on materials being cut, especially stuff like rope, and bench stones work fine without one.

Agreed

The handle needs to be a little longer for those of us with larger hands. I also agree with SG about the guard. I do like a narrower blade profile, over all, but not exclusively so. It depends on what I need a knife for. Generally narrower is better, with FFG of course. Any lanyard hole (I could do without this) needs to be on the end of the pommel, not curved down like the picture above because it will be in the way of my little finger.

I'm indifferent to the lanyard hole (take it or leave it), but otherwise this looks great. I also agree with eliminating the sharpening notch, which is always a snag point. 4-4.5" would be ideal. I still have a collection of mules for shorter blades :)

I was in a hurry to post my wild ideas before running out the door. I missed some of Sal's details. Doesn't change a lot in what I'd want but not sure I was hitting around what he was after.

Reckon the big question is the one we always ask folks looking for purchasing advice... What's the intended purpose? Is this mostly about making a production version of the mule?

I'm the opposite. I would much rather have a finger choil.

Not planning a finger choil.
Not planning a sharpening notch/choil.

Not planning many steels. Maybe 2 as regular.
Planning a Boltaron sheath. (sorry Darby :o You can probably use a Temperance leather sheath )

I’m picturing a Temperence2 with the thumb ramp removed.

Would be pretty cool if the only two available choices for steel were carbon or stainless.

I've been using the S90V mule in the kitchen for awhile now. No handle scales, just the bare mule. Surprisingly it seems to work fine for me. I like the sound of all the planned changes though, bring it on.

I think Sal nailed it on the last post. Put me down for at least one. No lanyard hole though.

Boltaron sounds good.
G10 okay, but Micarta still is my first choice, and always will be.

Steel?
AEB-L, or even CPM 20V, as per the Sustain.
Do what the masses beg for, I guess?
