Zdp future plans

No other knife will come out in Zdp, even in long periods?
Will a Mule/sprint run/normal production ever go out in Cowry x?
I would become sad if the answer was no :(

ZDP is good stuff. It's been the best of the japanese steels for me (yes, I even like it better than Superblue...)

We will see it again, I am certain. Spyderco is currently letting us experience the joys of new steels we have never tried.

I like the premium and super steels. It's the number one reason why I come to this forum and take a look at what people are talking abt several times a week. Spyderco is a leader in use of steels and using high end steels.

I'm down for more ZDP-189...and any other premium and super steel Sal wants to come out with. I'd like to see more ZDP-189, S90V, Cruwear, M390, Maxamet. I love them all.

Hi Supracor,

We'll continue to uses ZDP, though the price has gone up considerably and we have to purchase large quantities. It's not a standard steel for Hitachi to keep in inventory. For us, it's demand from you. That's what often determines what we play with.

Cowry is quite expensive and we've not seen enough demand to do a run.

Hey Sal, that is perfectly understandable and I’m sure all of us would like to keep ZDP-189 in the lineup. In speaking to demand, would you maybe consider ZDP for the FRN Police 4? That combination would be extremely interesting to me. :) Cheers, Radioactive

ZDP in the Police would be pretty cool.

I don't buy ZDP for myself, but do for certain others. I feel it has a place as cutlery steel.

I'd love to see a wharnie Delica in ZDP. I think it'd be perfect for the steel.

This. Maybe even a serrated Wharnie Delica in ZDP.

I don't always use ZDP-189, but when I do I use it in a Spyderco.

I too would love to see a Wharncliffe Delica in ZDP. I think the HAP40 one is great but a BRG/ZDP WC Delica would be the bee's knees!

Ya know I have to say, and this might put me in the minority, but I doubt I'll ever buy another knife in this steel in my lifetime.

I was very enamored with this steel before I owned it. It is portrayed as almost mystical. And it is a very fascinating and cool steel but now having owned it, it isn't anything remotely that I want in a folding EDC knife.

Any perceived or actual benefit to this steel, is in my opinion, far outweighed by it's almost refusal to sharpen. I'm a good sharpener but I hate this stuff. Yeah, you can get it super sharp but you can do that with most all steels and with a whole lot less effort. If edge retention is the big draw then I's say that I can literally sharpen four or five "lesser" steel knives in the same amount of time as I find myself putting into this steel.

I don't have anything in S110V but I have S90V and I will gladly sharpen it all day over ZDP-189. And it will wear my equipment far less. Aside from just enthusiast allure, I can't imagine what attraction this steel has in a sub-four inch folding knife. And even in larger fixed blades, why?

I got caught up in the hype over this steel but I am way past it. Fascinating? Yes. Practical? No.

Surely you jest Eli. :)

ZDP-189 is a pleasure to sharpen with simple SiC stones. I’ve found it gets silly sharp off as low as a 220grit SiC rock and near hair whittling off 600grit.
