Thanks Ranger and Capt’n, I’m very pleased with how this one turned out - possibly my best RIT dye job to date. I also made a very nice-looking gray one too but sold it on BF a while back. I’ve found foliage green G10 is very accepting of the actual RIT dye color/shade you’re shooting for. Cheers, Radioactive

Hey! I used gray Rit Dye, the powdered kind, and literally dipped it in there for 5 seconds at a time. I knew it would go quick so I would dunk in the dye, pull, rinse in cold water, and repeat.

I've done it a few times to the Salt yellow. First I use the "Kelly Green" powder towards the pivot end to give it a lime green look. Then I finished with a fade using the "Aquamarine" liquid

Pictured here with a non-Spyderco that started as "Jade" (not translucent) with a "Royal Purple"/"Tropical Teal"/"Emerald" fade.

Most recently I hit the K390 blue Stretch with a synthetic liquid "Sapphire Blue" fade

Thanks brother! Every time I'm scared to death I'm going to ruin it, but so far it has always turned out well.

These look great! What did you do to the stretch blade? Is that a custom patina?

Many thanks! Yea, I was experimenting a bit with this one because this is something I've only ever done before on traditionals with carbon steel blades. First, I soaked the blade in some apple cider vinegar for about a half an hour to get a nice even base patina going. Then for the design I used mustard with a little apple cider vinegar mixed in to get the consistency right, and then apply it with a toothpick. I applied a couple of lines following the lines of the edge, and then applied the dots to the rest of the blade randomly. Then let it sit for 30 min, rinse it off, and reapply. For the second coat I just did one line in between the earlier two, and then again randomly applied the dots to the rest of the blade. It's where the two coats overlap that you really get the blues to come through at certain angles. I'm really happy with how it turned out even though it's not exactly how I had envisioned. I'm diggin' the Stretch quite a bit and glad I picked it up.

Here's a closer view of the other side
Image

There's some pretty good tutorials on YouTube, including one where a guy does it on an Opinel, which is the method I follow for the mustard design. Here's something I was able to achieve on a GEC and a Case, where I just used the mustard and didn't do the ACV soak. I now do this on all of my GEC's and Case's with CV steel, I let the main blade get a natural fruit patina and then do a design on the secondary blade. With the Stretch I was experimenting with combining the two methods.

Knives&Lint,
That’s some great work. Kind of reminds me of fish scales. I might have to give that a try on some of my case carbon blades to test it out. Thanks for sharing.

I'm wondering if anyone has dyed the K390 FRN scales a darker shade of green or really what the color options are (other than black) if you start with this:

Those fades look great. That K390 Stretch 2 looks amazing! I would love to see Spyderco do fades like that with their “Zome” process.

Pacific Salt LC200N in a 30 minute Royal Blue bath. Sorry for the photo dump. It is really hard to get the true color in pictures. So I tried with different locations and lighting. I would say in real life it is more to the green side than the blue side. I tried a 15 minute bath, but it was just green still.

Yeah it seems a little more on the green side especially in person. I think it is close to what he was describing.
