Share the love!

I started this thread for us to share our experiences with Sharpening and using Vtoku2 (V2) together here.

So far, I'm really liking the 1k Chosea Edge, V2 doesn't seem as aggressive as Super Blue but the edge should be more resistant to chiping.

After missing out on the SB Sprint I'm happy to have a steel that shares some attributes

If you really want some super blue, it is readily available in kitchen knives.

Deadbox, I'll look to see if I still have any Superblue Enduras so you can run a comparison. If I have one put away I'll let you know.

Joe, that would be radical.

That patina looks great. I like the subtle change in grey along the lamination line. My Super Blue Endura looks similar. Looking forward to toting around some V-TOKU2, even though I swore off carbon steels in Indiana summers.

Hey Shawn,

It's a steel that the Blade-smiths are using for forging.

V-TOKU 2

This stuff is very edge tough,

However, it doesn't take the edge like white steel or Super Blue, those steels seem to have alot more "bite" or aggression at the edge at 1000 grit.

It still gets just as sharp just not with the same aggressiveness

reminds me of 52100 with a subtle amount more "bite."

The hardness "feels" like 63 hrc on the stones and with use, but that's just speculation, it would be nice to hear Sal chime in and give us an idea of what they went for.

V2 Deburrs like a champion.

This steel is alot tougher then white steel even at high hardness

So far the 1000 grit range has been my favorite finish.

This stuff should be GOLD to people that love to strop there edges to maintain them.

Very very responsive to stroping, I'd imagine one could keep a reasonable amount of sharpeness going for a long while with a properly set bevel, a fine ceramic and a 1um strop.

In use, I hit a metal poll inside the box when breaking down the cardboard package.

Checked the edge, nothing. I was impressed, so I whacked it on some stainless steel, aluminum, cut and stabed a aluminum can. No observable damage, very cool.
Subtile hesitation on cutting newspaper but no snags.

Stropped it on 1um diamond compound on leather.

BOOM
Back to screaming sharp.

I likey.

It's 0.018" out of the box.

For reference a tenacious is 0.017" and a Shaman is 0.026"

I'm already at 0.019" from about 6 Sharpenings to find what finish I like.

I'd say the spec sheet isn't very intense or sexy as far as people wanting insane attributes. But insane performance is always insane comprise.

Besides steel chemistry and Rockwell hardness isn't always the ultimate decider in high performance.

The take away so far is that we get more toughness then similar japanese carbon steel at similar hardness and we get more versatility in abrasive selection since we don't need high power stones to cut high speed steel.

I feel the steel is best with a medium grit to high polish on a alumina based waterstone. It's a joy to sharpen.

I think people will be very satisfied in practice with V-TOKU 2 on a folder.

It's got a great blend of hard use and knife sharpener favor to it

Thanks for the review Shawn! Appreciate the beta on Rivers Edge too! Able to get a couple Endura inbound since my KC pre-orders are in limbo.

I’m in the same boat. Usually KC gets knives pretty quick. I got my Caribbean promptly after they dropped.

Haha thanks Sal, it's always great to play with the new japanese sprints.
Cheers!

May I ask what the hardness came out too?

Mine appeared in the mailbox today, I really dig the color, but I haven't had a chance to sharpen it...

I think I might wind up actually liking the Endura quite a bit, I usually go for 3" and under blades, but the fact that I *really* like the Military had convinced me that I needed to try one eventually. It certainly won't kick the various smaller Spydies out of my pocket on work days, but it just might steal some pocket time from the Manix crew and Military on yard work days.

Tomorrow evening I hope to take the Hapstone to it, I'll do the full bonded diamond progression at 15 DPS all the way to 2k/1 micron polish for starters, then if for some reason that doesn't produce good results I'll try a natural stone or ceramic as the finisher. It's not half bad right out of the box...
