Howard Viele/Spyderco
I purchased one of these Spyderco Knives yesterday NIB, for $87.47+Tax. I think I got a good deal. The guy at the Gun&Knife Shop told me that one scale is "micarta" and the opposite scale is "carbon fiber". I think one side is definitely micarta, but the opposite side does not look like CF. Does anyone know for sure what the "smooth", back scale (where the clip is located) is made of?
Thanks,
KR
P.S. This is a GREAT Spyderco! The action is smooth as silk.

Nice find on the Viele!
It's one of the smooooothest knives that Spyderco put out IMO.
I think that the clip side is matte finished to keep the knife from working its way out of your pocket. I think that was one of the changes that was made from the first model to the second mode.
The first model was AUS-8 and had two pins showing at the piviot end, the second was VG-10 and only had one pin.

Bruceter,
Smoothest action of any Spyderco bar one - The Gunting. Love the Viele's fit and finish. Good dress knife but where do you find the version with micarta on both sides???? <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
KR,
Excellent price on a super Spyder.

My Viele PE just arrived. Everything about this knife spells quality. It is finished up like a piece of jewelry and has the best and smoothest lockup of any folder I own. My viele seems to have a slight detent ground into the blade tang for the liner lock to nest into, may be a fluke. I had never handled one before and like the open back, heavy liners and the fact that it is assembled with screws (and 2 rivits). The blade/liner spacers provide enough clearance so that there will be no blade scouring. The shaped grip is polished Micarta and the one on the clip side is a matt finished Micarta. Much attention to detail. Know know why this knife is in such demand. $97.50 shipped and thanks to KR I got the last one at that price. Web images don't do this one justice.

It is not difficult to see why we all love our Viele's. It's a great design expertly constructed with high quality materials. I have the updated/upgraded version, too.
My personal modification was to replace the chrome clip with a black one from a Zowada. (Fyi, the clip screws on the Viele were of a different length from the Zowada's so I had to use the same Viele chrome screws instead of the blackened Zowada screws).

Congratulations for your new knives. Fine stuff and you know it's a Viele from the first glance. Class and quality. The bolster is a nice touch too.
