X different steels in X different models

#1

Post by wrdwrght »

The signature line of a member here soon got me wondering how many individual steel-types I could pull from my Spyderco collection WITHOUT pulling out the same model? I was surprised to find over a dozen.

Now I'm up to 16.

K390 Police4
204P Military
S90V Manix2 XL
SE Pacific Salt
S30V Shaman
ZDP189 Stretch2
M4 Bradley Folder
52100 PM2
CruWear Manix2
LC200N SpydieChef
Super Blue Caly 3.5
S110V Native5
Elmax Urban
XHP Techno
VG10 Dragonfly2
N690Co Squeak

How varied, by this measure, is your collection? You may be surprised, which is this thread's only goal...

S90v, s110v, m4, and 204p.... All militaries.

There are many reasons to like spyderco, but the quality and variety of steels offered is BY FAR the main reason I'm such a fan. I honestly haven't found a single knife company where I actually love more than 25% of their models offered, so steel plays a big role for me.

So, the answer is 1?

Not a wrong answer, nor an embarrassing one (I'd like more Millies). The idea here is just to gauge steel+model variation.

Wow! 50! Nice :spyder: collection.

I’ve had many more, but I sell ones that I don’t use. So that I can either buy a new model, or upgrade one. There’s so much variety, and I want to try them all

S110V Manix
BD1 UKPK
S30V Vrango
S90V Native
M4 PM2
VG10 Endura
ZDP Dragonfly
H1 Rock Salt

I have two other Manix's as well, that would net me XHP and an M4 repeat. So 8 unique steel/models from 10 knives.

Manbug - ZDP 189
Dragonfly - Super Blue
Tasman - H1
Delica - HAP 40
Native - LC200N
Para3 - Maxamet
PM2 - S110V
P'kal - S30V
Yojimbo - S90V
K12P Chef Knife - VG10

Fun game. I got 10 :D Only steels I couldn't squeeze in were Cruwear (para3), M4 (pm2), Damascus VG-10 (Delica), and 93X Thor Damasteel(Native). Only models I couldn't squeeze in were the ladyhawk and HBDfly (H1).
So I guess I have (if I'm counting right) 24 Spydies, 12 different models, and 14 different steels.

I have 24 different steels. I’ll have to see how many Incan come up with without duplicate models. :)

Stretch in ZDP-189
PM2 in M390
Pacific Salt in H-1
Mule Team in S35VN
Byrd Wings in 8Cr13Mo (from memory)-does this count?
Delica in VG-10
GB1 in CPM M4
Utility kitchen knife in MBS-26

That is 8 from memory. I have other steels and other models, but there’s always a repeat, either of the model or the steel.

Turns out I have 26 different steels in my Spyderco knives and 24 of them can be represented in different models. Yup, I am a steel geek. The other two are both mules in CPM20CV and CPM4V. Also, I left out the steels used for cladding except for the damascus/vg10. I figure it is unique enough to make the list even though VG10 was already represented. If I separated the clad Super Blue from the solid Super Blue I could add the Clay3.5 in solid Super Blue to the list as well.

Ugh, wish I could have known about that Centofante. Been looking for one, new or used and yours looked to be in really good condition! The search continues.
