With utmost respect ... why did you kill the snake?

We have rattlesnakes here in MO but I've never seen one in the wild.

Well rattlesnakes are not welcome in this neighborhood and it was right where my niece gets on the schoolbus.

That sounds like a potentially deadly situation.marty_bill_ wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 8:22 pmWell rattlesnakes are not welcome in this neighborhood and it was right where my niece gets on the schoolbus.
I like snakes (have one for a pet) and generally leave them alone, but there are times when killing them is most certainly justified.

Yeah, I can understand when kids are involved. Different ball game in that situation VS being out on a solo hike.

Fair enough! :)marty_bill_ wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 8:22 pmWell rattlesnakes are not welcome in this neighborhood and it was right where my niece gets on the schoolbus.
The only snakes (venomous) I've regrettably felt I had to kill were snakes transiting our backyard when our kids were little.

Having dealt with rattle snakes and you know their ability to uncoil in the blink of an eye leap some incredible distances and kill you well lets just say a shot gun with cartridges loaded with tiny little mini PM2 and Para3 blades is a more appropriate tool. :D

The only snakes I truly like are Kingsnakes. I welcome them in my yard. Venemous snakes better stay off my property as there are young children around. Off my property, I leave all snakes alone. I grew up around water moccasins (cottonmouths) and I don't care what anyone says, they can be aggressive for absolutely no reason. They will chase you. Maybe only 20% of the ones I've encountered are like that, but that is enough. I've had one strike my zoom lizard while bass fishing. He was hooked. I held him at a distance using the length of the fishing rod and dropped a big rock on his head. I don't take any chances. But I love and appreciate nature and generally don't have any desire to kill an animal just doing what he is genetically programmed to do.
Today I cut some rope with my Resilience while splicing some eyes in the lines for one of the tugboats. The Resilience was due for sharpening anyway so I saved my Pacific Salt as I enjoy keeping it very sharp.

Last time I came across a rattlesnake it was 2 am on a mountain in heavy rain. I was hammock camping and got up to relieve myself. Took ten steps, heard a rattle, took a split second to fully wake up and process what was going on. Decided I should go tinkle elsewhere, lol. He left me alone the rest of the trip.Doeswhateveraspidercan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 9:40 pmHaving dealt with rattle snakes and you know their ability to uncoil in the blink of an eye leap some incredible distances and kill you well lets just say a shot gun with cartridges loaded with tiny little mini PM2 and Para3 blades is a more appropriate tool. :D

He would make a nice backing for a self bow. I’ve heard they taste like chicken too.marty_bill_ wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 6:45 pm20190820_174536-1152x1536.jpg

Well, they taste pretty good. :D
We raised goats when I was a kid and they were constantly getting killed by snakes. I have seen a couple of dogs get bit too.

Thanks! It is a great knife and the price is amazing. Definitely going to get a couple for the kitchen and camping. I might try to do something to add more grip on the handle though.
Also, rattlesnake nuggets are pretty good. Battered and fried.
