Game over Canada? WW’s stops importing Spyderco.

#1

Post by Liquid Cobra »

So I was browsing the Warriors and Wonders site (like I often do) when I noticed their new announcement on the front page. It seems they are no longer importing Spyderco knives due to the CBSA ruling. I mean, I just don’t get it. Why just Spyderco? Why not Benchmade, CRK or any other brand?

Does anyone have any info on this?

Devastating.

The beginning of the end. I'm using Bucks two handers now, and slipjoints. Probably done with this forum.

Why use two handlers when you don’t have to?

Maybe it's only spyderco because of the hole, and the ease with which you can "drop" the knife open while grasping the hole?

I'm not sure why they'd stop importing Spyderco fixed blades (or something like the Pingo) though.

Sad to hear that. W&W was a good place to shop for Spydercos. I’m guessing the other brands may soon follow the same path...

Bit odd, slipjoints and fixed blades are still legal, maybe they just don't sell well enough so they have decided to stop selling the brand?

No, this isn’t correct. All folding locking knives in Canada are still legal. The law hasn’t changed.

It only says they will stop importing Spyderco folding knives.

I still believe this is little more than a temporary hindrance. Laws and rulings come and go; just look at what's happening in the USA. At this point, anyone who sincerely believes locking folders will never again be legally imported into Canada is clearly over-reacting. In the meantime, there are plenty other ways to get your knives. If anything, it'll make each new acquisition much more special.

To be honest, I bought a knife from W&W once and it was one of the worst purchasing experiences of my life. I'm certainly not wishing ill on them, but if my experience reflects their normal business practices, I can't say I'll weep if they go through a bit of a rough patch.

funny they still stock lots of Chinese knives that meet the same criteria as the Spyderco. I think that there are political games being played on multiple levels here. Time to change the government.

I hope they will at least still carry the various fixed blades from Spyderco. For example, the fixed blade Spyderco Moran hunting knives and other models. Man that is sad that that is happening :(

Care to enlighten us on how to get our knives?
And I wouldn't say we're overreacting. How do you know the outcome of this steaming pile of dung? Also, sorry you had a bad experience with W and W. I've ordered tons from them, and all good.

Might as well be ready and quite used to them in case. I still use a Delica wharnie at work.

Fixed blades are so not for me, for EDC anyway. Never understood that. Who knows what they'll do?

I wouldn't be surprised if this had more to do with the Chinese being willing to skirt the laws, than with the Canadian government playing games on multiple levels... with folding knives. As far as I can tell, Spyderco has very strong ethics when it comes to these issues (as seen with the whole auto/balisong problem) and simply won't risk breaking the law in the search for profits.

I've only recently been trying to establish a second home in Canada, so my experience here is limited, but I have plenty of experience importing things into countries with far worse borders. Since it is not technically legal to do so, however, I do not know if it's okay to discuss here. All I can say is I've brought in or ordered quite a few knives already without a hitch. I might think twice before buying an expensive custom piece, but I personally feel the risk is worth taking for most of Spyderco's catalog.

I used to have to wait anywhere from 2 to 6 months to get my knives delivered, using a complicated combination of expensive freight forwarding services, bribes, reliable friends and prayers. Now it's down to an average of 1 week, so in my perspective Canadians still have it pretty easy overall. YMMV.

I don't claim to know the outcome of this ordeal, but I doubt it's a permanent change. Just looking at Canadian gun laws through the years, it seems these things are never set in stone. I believe many members here pointed out Australia went through something similar in the past; I wouldn't be surprised to ultimately see the same outcome here.

My bad experience with W&W wasn't with the product, but rather with the service.

The wording of W&W's announcement makes me wonder whether this is a decision they have made not to import Spydercos, or a decision Spyderco has made to stop exporting knives to Canada so as to avoid the risk of having entire shipments seized by Canadian Customs.

There are other sources for Spyderco in Canada but unfortunately W&W was one of the best and someplace I could visit in person.

It does feel like a rash decision since all the fixed knifes, the slipits and the sharpening tools won' t fall into the current gravity knife miss-classification.

It also feels weird since if you go to their page there are a lot of other knives with flippers or axis locks etc. that would be suspect. Maybe they'll be dropping other brands as well.

Re China knives that should not be a factor. The way the CBSA works they'll be well aware what the store sells and they have specific border agents that audit their incoming shipments. It's not a random process.

For sure disappointing news.

If I am reading the announcement correctly, the key word seems to be "able". My condolences either way

Agreed. We don't yet have enough info. I hope it's Spyderco's doing. Otherwise it looks like W&W caved to hysterical bureaucrats (who, BTW, don't change just because a government changes).
