Knives as Art

Having romped and walked to death around the louve this week I came across quite a few blades. (What there are paintings?). If you were putting on an exhibit what Spydercos would be placed on display as art and why?

I agree that an exhibit showcasing the entire ethnic series would be really cool!

A handful of others I'd choose to display on their own - Nirvana to showcase Spydercos manufacturing capabilities and its a fantastic looking design. Tighe Stick for similar reasons to the Nivana. The milling on the handles is beautiful and needs to be appreciated! The PPT (all 3 for the sake of display ) and Pheonix I would choose to display for their design. I tend to consider the PPT my all time favorite Spyderco design and I would choose the Pheonix, again because I really like the looks and design of the knife. SpyKer because its a rare collaboration with another well known knife brand. Paramilitary 2 because it's widely regarded as one of the best pocket knives available. I honestly think the Paramilitary 2 should in the MoMA next to the Opinel!
Would also probably have to display an original C01 Worker and a 40th Anniversary Native 5 for the sake of company history. Different reasons for each knife, but I'd consider all worthy of a museum quality exhibit!

Jess horn original model. C27 a definite piece of art. Have to agree with the Kris too. Massad Ayoob as modern art. Then again art is subjective. Worker needs to be there too. Have to include the hand. Sharpmaker because it was a defining product and imitated by others. Spyderco has changed the way we see knives. Remember the pocket clip is an innovation used by almost everyone. Spyderco pocket clip just by itself.

Those are incredible pieces Deacon.

I have some custom pocket clips from Steel Flame (I really wish they made clips for Spyderco), but my only 'art piece' is the 40th Anniversary Native. Damasteel is art. The fluted CF is art, and fit and finish is art as well. A beautiful and beautifully put together knife.

The blade geometry of the Yo2 is something I like a lot as well, but I don't think many besides me would call it Art.

Also the rest of Spyderco's knives, because they are all beautiful works of art. Not necessarily in the fancy-engraving-and-expensive-materials sort of way, but in the weird and cool way that an SR-71 Blackbird looks like a work of art, because of taking form-follows-function to the extremes until the result is something slick and elegant, with no extra unneeded pieces or parts missing, just pure awesomeness.

For a standard Spyderco that has not been customized it’d be Chaparral Stepped Titanium. Exquisite milling.

For me, those Spydies that fill the "knives as art" include the Damascus Caly 3, Vallotton Sub-Hilt. and all the jigged bone Delicas and Enduras. In truth, many of the standard models with the newer "exotic" steels could fit the bill. Oops, almost forgot the Centofante Memory and the different stepped Ti models. Will probably have to edit this post as so many Spydies are functional art.
