There are tradeoffs to any knife steel so this is a very hard question to answer. Spyderco has some special request steels that I think are great. I actually put together an insanely long guide on this subject and compared some of Spyderco's most popular steels to some of the other most popular steels if anyone is interested. I've seen spy27 touted as a sharpener's steel and s45vn touted as finder grained variant compared to it's predecessors. How are the edges that they take?

Hello Deadboxhero,

3 years down the road and many new steels out now. Have your opinions changed on the best edge steels? I was lucky to pick up a s45vn Mule recently, and a Para 3 Spy27 when the first came out. I have used and sharpened both, and thought about differences vs lc200n and 8cr13mov. But seriously, I know nothing. It's all just fun for me, cut sharpen repeat.
