THAT ALISTAIR PHILLIPS KNIFE!!!

It looks incredible! Perfect proportions also, I hope it doesn't feel too thin in hand. The BM 940 is like that for me for some reason.

Perhaps I missed something. Why does the Nati Amor design have a 'BS' logo?
I believe it's for the designer's label, "Black Snow Customs."
Ah, I see. Thanks Michael

That Paysan is a great looking knife and at only about 4.4 oz. for such a long knife it will carry well. The Rhino, of course, I have been waiting on since inception.

I’m about to commit heresy when I say I never really liked the Nirvana. Sure, I appreciated the cool design and production quality etc… But I just don’t like bead blasted or coated blades for my personal EDC knife. Enter the Paesan, love it! Straight to the top my wishlist. It’s in my favorite size category for pure user knives; folders with around 3,5 to 4 inch blades like the Stretch, ATR and Para 2. I’ve probably said it before and I’ll likely say it again in future Amsterdam Meet posts but this is a must-have, period.

The Techno 1 is, to me, a wonderfully quirky design. That massive overbuilt little beast still cuts like many much more ‘dainty’ knife designs. The Techno 2, was noticeably thinner. Although I appreciate the new blade profile and bright green anodized stand-offs, I’m not sure yet I like the thinner profile. Since these changes come from customer requests, for the custom version mind you, so I’m in the minority here.
I think a Paysan pic slipped into this batch ;)
You're right! Sorry about the goof, I fixed it. I'm on the road right now and the WiFi is not as stable as it is back home. :)

It sure looks a nice little sidekick of Slysz Bowie :D
I mean, so is the original Techno, but the sheepsfoot blade shape does make it appear, well, less "assault" looking
Btw thanks as always for the effort and nice photos, take care!

Phillips is most interesting to me, so far. Only if it has some higher end steel. S110V would be awsome. S30V/ Carbon fibre from Taichung is boring:(

the Alistair Phillips design has an incredibly cool looking blade shape. That one is going to be really tempting when it comes out!

Alistair Phillips folder seems to make quite an impression, is a very nice piece, this one is a certain buy 4me and Paysan is already pushed down in the list :D

And this is another one that got the clip/lanyard hole setup just about right, I don't understand how these guys are able to figure it out right and Spyderco isn't :D

I really don't get why the clip on the Brouwer is so far down the handle. It looks way worse than the Para3, which upset people :p Otherwise it looks really nice! I'm always a fan of knives with straight backs like the Native...

Spyderco 2018 Production Sample – Kevin Smock

#133

Post by Mr Blonde »

Another interesting new design was the Kevin Smock design collaboration. To me, it looked like a new take on the compression lock. A large button appeard to be connected to the locking tab that pushes away the locking tab to unlock the blade. It was very easy to operate. Eric did mention that they are still working to refine the system, so there could be some changes in the final production version.

Spyderco 2018 Production Sample – Brad Southard Hanan

#134

Post by Mr Blonde »

The Hanan was shown last year and I can’t really recognize many differences from before. However, Eric pointed out the CQI to the pivot. If you look inside you see phosphor bronze washers, indicating the new ball bearing system that uses bigger balls and slightly thicker steel rings. It certainly flips like a champ. The design reminds me of the Positron, but the Hanan seems a bit more ‘dressed-up’ with that bolster and curvy blade.

There appears to be CQI progress on clips as well. look at the clip design and placement on the Smock for example. Similar to the medium size Lum as I recall. Solves the “deep” carry preference and still allows a decent lanyard hole.

Does the Smock clip truly need 3 anchor screws? If you go with two (or even one, like the Hanan) in a recess, it should be sturdy enough. This would allow for the clip to be used for left-hand carry, and maybe push the clip closer to the end.

Alternatively, standard clip + lanyard post instead of hole, depending on how close the edge is to the post in closed position.

Spyderco 2018 Production Sample – Lil’ Native Backlock

#137

Post by Mr Blonde »

I got a chance to handle the Lil’ Native with a compression lock at SHOT and last year’s Amsterdam Meet. And although it’s an impressively cool translation of the Native design, I mean it actually felt like handling a dragongly sized Native, it still wasn’t quite what I liked. After collecting and using Spyderco’s for almost 20 years, a Native kind of ‘has to have a backlock’. I can’t give a rational explanation. You all have fun with those compression lock lil’ Natives, this backlock version will be mine.

I agree, the Native should have a backlock. The Lil' Native has me all nostalgic; the original FRN Native was my very first Spyderco and just blew me away in terms of ergonomics. I'm definitely gonna have to pick up one of these.

....any chance they're working on a backlock Shaman? :D

Spyderco 2018 Production Sample - Mantra 3

#140

Post by Mr Blonde »

The Mantra 3 is making my Delica collection look a bit worried. The overall profile is very similar to my beloved Delica designs. There are, however, many differences – the materials, flipper action just to name a few. Customer feedback on the Mantra 1 and 2 apparently was that many customers didn’t like the Ti handle scratching easily, or the ‘staining’ M4 steel blade. This, as well as CQI on the flipper/ball bearing system, has resulted in the Mantra 3. A cool option for those who want something more upscale than a Delica, but still in the same size and weight range.
