What knife do you carry for self defense?

#1

Post by fredswartz »

We just did 5 miles on the boulevard. Have been trying to do this a couple of times a week to get in shape. On the upper level there is no problem, mostly joggers and part time walkers. On the lower level there are drug dealers etc.. I have been carring a Civilian in case something gets ugly. Hope that it never does. Does anyone else carry a Spyderco for emergencies and what would it take for you to use it?

Why, the I had on me.

On the serious side, if I knew that I would be working in a situation/place that might be considered "hostile" to me, then I'd probably pack either a Military or the Starmate. Of course, you have the ultimate anti-mugger knife when you pack the Civie. Dang, and I'd hate to be on the wrong side of that blade!
Now, even before I'd pull my knife out for self-defense I'd try everything in my power to avoid a conflict that would incorporate the use of leathel (Sp?) force. From there on, the situation could have several outcomes:
1. If my family were present, then of course I'd do what I'd have to do to protect them. (But really, I think my .9mm to be more effective than any knife...) In this event, given that I've only my knife to use, I'll pull it a lot sooner than if I were alone.
2. If I am alone, then I'll more than likely do what I gotta' do to either (A) Get away from the commie, or (B) Prepare myself for a fight.

Well, that's about all. Let's just hope you don't encounter any of those hoodlums on your walks.

Take care!

If I KNOW! I will be putting myself in dangerous situations such as my late night interstate trips, I feel VERY secure with a Merlin set up for lefty carry and my Military clipped IWB.
When I get my Rivercity neck sheaths I'll probably add either a CQC-7 or my Specwar.
I have a CCP so if I'm in S.C. the Thunder Ranch 45 w/hydroshocks goes with me 24/7 now Ron

.9mm, huh? You'll pinprick them to death with that! I like the Endura, or the Buck 105 FB that rides next to the seat belt release in the work van.

Never underestimate the impossible.

I carry a Kimber 45 for self defence. If I had to go for a knife as a self defence tool it would be a military.

I learn something new everyday, even though I don't want to. Jeff

If possible, avoid the area with drug dealers. I carry a Gunting for EDC, and would use it for self-defense. Every situation being different, I will not say what it will take for me to use it. I would probably use a pistol first, and I do carry daily when in my home state. FWIW, I have used a deadly weapon in self-defense.

I'm not very original. The Civilian is my choice here.

Gee, that was a great post! Unfortunately it didn't take and all that came through was the heading. I'll try one more time and get on the list that carries the obvious choice, the Civilian. (Not very original, am I?)

Unfortunately I don't have a Civie yet, so I would probably carry my G-10 Police SE or Military PE for self defense while jogging, but I would not jog through drug country either. Be careful out there.

Wouldn't dare try to walk this area after dark. These guys have been known to drop out of trees and assault people. Have been wondering about the Streamlight and Sureshot lights. I know that this has been covered before but both seem to offer a blinding light at night. Is one superior to the other as far as blinding light?

I have either my Spyderco stainless fully serrated VG-10 Police model or my Cold Steel Vaquero Grande with me as my "defensive/offensive" folder, along with one of my Glock pistols.

Gunting is always on me. A Glock accompanies me where possible. (I can't carry on college campus.)

Shabaria, what else?
Oh well, sometimes is the Delica (prefferably SE), sometimes the Native, or the Meerkat.
And the little Chive as backup.
I hope I'll never have to use them for self defense

I don't often feel the necessity to carry a weapon of any kind but once in a while just for peace of mind my choice is the Massad Ayoob PE. Otherwise a Navigator or Mouse will do for utility reasons only.

I carry the Gunting, sometimes the Spyderhawk as a backup. Never had to draw a knife (fortunately!).

The Gunting is my favourite SD knife 'cause its design allows for using it closed, thus not escalating a situation any more than necessary.

I have taken to carrying the Gunting tip-up -- yesterday, I carried it tip-down, and the thing somehow opened partially in my trousers, slicing through a perfect pair of jeans. The silver lining to the cloud was that it could just as easily have sliced through my leg.

An important lesson learned: make sure the knife you carry is firmly closed. ;-)

Depends on your skills. Generally I'd suggest FRN SE Endura or Delica for left and right side carry. Choose a blade length that is legal in your area (3 inch Delica is a safer bet if unsure). Why? 1. Serrations cut through most types of clothing better than PE and require less resharpening. 2. Both knives have blades that allow for thrusts and slashes. 3. Drone trainers are available (practice is very important). 4. FRN is less slippery than SS (if your fighting for your life your palms will be sweating). 5. A knife should be available to either hand (you also have a back-up). 6. These models can be use as general utility knives and are more likely to be viewed that way by police. 7. These knives are very high quality for the cost so you can afford to buy 2 plus a drone without going broke (If you lose one you're not out $200). Hope this helps!

Since changing jobs, I don't really carry a knife for SD purposes in mind anymore. However, if needed, I'm sure that my Endura SE(work EDC) could fit the bill if absolutely needed.

For non-work carry, I do carry either a Millie PE or CE for SD, along with my Buck 110.

Although I could, I'm not permitted to carry a firearm legally, so I normally carry the Civie in case of the unlikely. Still S&S, I have noticed your mention of the 9mm in previous threads???? But I'm puzzled. I believe that if you can't end a bad situation with a half dozen .355 Cor-Bons, you shouldn't be carrying anyway in the first place. Just IMHO.

Aaron,
How are you doing? I can understand why you feel the need to be safe especially, in an unsafe word. I own a Matriarch and the tip has bit me accidently so I wouldn't want to be the mugger or lunatic on the receiving end of it. The Matriarch is a self defense only knife. I adore my Massod Ayoob Folder as well and that knife is intimidating once it's open. I hope this helps!!
