Good Knife for Lawn Care?

#1

Post by Tool »

Ive just started Working Full Time as a Land Scaper, We will de just about everything. I see this as a Good Reason to get another Knife. I was going to buy a Civilian but i think that can Wait. I will be Cutting everything From Trimmer Line, Rope, Cardboard, Plastic Bags... Just about everything that defines "Utility"

I now have an Endura and its Great but im looking into a Hawkbill type Blade because of the amount of Rope's and Lines ill be Cutting. There are three to Choose from but im really leaning towards the Spyderhawk as this is the biggest that isnt made just for selfdefence..

Maby someone that shares the same occupation could throw some information my Way..

I'd say the Spyderhawk would be a good choice. The 4" blade would offer plenty of reach.

VG-10 SE to boot.

Endura SE would be my first choice, then the Hawk. Either way, expect to fire up the 204 on a regular basis.

I'd be thinking about an SE Native and a Spyderhawk to back it up.

And, wellcome to the forum Tool. You will find no dearth of opinions here. And some dang smart knife lore and knowledge.

I am with cmassicotte.Only chage it to a PE Native, there are some things you just can't do well with a SE.

I've got 1 acre of grass to mow, but I don't carry any cos. I'm paranoid about looseing one or it falling underneath the mower, so I carry a cheap Gerber LST E-Z Out. I guess I cherish our cos a little much! RKBA!

How about a large dyad model, then you have the full size rescue type serrated blade and a pointy PE blade which works better for opening boxes and more intricate slicing?

I belive you need at least two blades also, but I would be reluctant to risk a Dyad. If the endura is PE, go with the Spyderhawk.

Knife Knut on a shoestring budget.
RKBA

Dyad would seem like a good option, but it would be a waste of a hard to get knife... If the Endura is a PE, I'd go with the hawk or the Harpy. Huge fan of the Harpy myself :)

Aloha DutchBlades,

This thread threw me off initially due to when it was posted!

Agree on the hawkbill use in the yard. I use a "generic" Hawkbill I got from Home Depot. Steel used is decent enough on this hawbill folder, and if I lose or damage it, no big deal. Gotta admit though, this generic folder is proving to be pretty good...

Been doing that type work for 18years. Best I have found for all around performance is the police 3 g10 serrated. A serrated edge is almost an necessity... I think the Tasman Salt would be a good choice...The hawkbill blade is useful but has its limitations. I generally have a folding utility knife handy with a box of blades because there are some thing you just don't want to use a nice knife on.

I used the Manix2 long enough it almost has a wharncliffe look about it due to sharpening dings out of the edge. Still one of my favorite knifes but it has taken a backseat to the lighter easier to carry Police. I also find that the reach is really nice for a lot of tasks.

As a plus, when you get a 4.25 SE blade out and go to work cutting things, all the job site trash talk ceases :)

Use to do.lawn maintenance for a living and before you all get up in arms remember I am also a huge Spyderco fan.

I would suggest for this type of work a Leatherman Surge instead of or in addition to a Spydie. This way you get a PE and SE blade, saws and screwdrivers. You will be surprised how ofter your mower and whips need adjustment and repair.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

A serrated Tasman would be ideal since the Spyderhawk has been discontinued a long time.

Or maybe a time machine since this thread is from 2003?

This s certainly a contender for ghost thread of the month :p

I have good power tools (a mixture of Stihl and Husqvarna) so not much need for maintenance work. I generally carry my Delica 4 which performs valiantly at cutting 3mm brush cutter thread and some times I'll use my PM2 so that it doesn't feel left out :D

I never even noticed it was 13 years old! :p
And yes, for hard use a generic folder is the easiest solution.
Always carry a spydie but I tend to carry a cheaper blade as hard-user at work.
