A Polestar by any other name

#1

Post by MichaelScott »

I could call it a Polaris. A Stella Maris. The Alpha Ursae Minoris. If I wait until the year 3000 it could be the Gamma Cephei.

Polestar is OK as long as I don’t get it confused with the new Volvo.

All of the easy names were already used. We avoid those out of respect for the user. Also, any Scout knows what a Polestar is and probably doesn't think about a stripper. :p

Scouts, being prepared, likely think about more than we suspect. :) But, seriously, “the pole star” has a long and respected history.

Weird. I'm an Eagle scout and I had never heard the name "pole star" applied to the North Star until now. We called it "the North Star" or just "Polaris".

I actually had to google "pole star", because I was surprised that there was a piece of scouting lore so common in other places but that I'd never even heard.

the most important thing about a name for company or a model is, in my opinion, that you remember it.

Interesting thing about the pole star is that the actual star that is closest to the North Pole changes during the 24,000 year precession of the poles due to the earth’s axial tilt. But, there will often, not always, be some star that is close to the North Pole, call the star what you will, it will still be the pole star. Temporarily.

Agreed. It also helps if the name is fairly easy to spell and pronounce. (I’ve learned this the hard way). IMO, Polestar is an appropriate name for a knife.

I think it's actually a great name. It sounds significant. I'm less wild about the Alcyone name, I had to look it up to find out what it meant.

Spyderco has pretty good names in general I think.

Kinda figures.. Ford Orion and Orion pictures (when i thought about it, maybe there are Orion knives as well?)
Must be a real challenge to find unique names?
