What two years of abuse on a PM2 by a stone mason looks like...

#1

Post by Lumpy620 »

So, a couple years back, my good friend Julian asked me if I had any knives which I would be willing to part with.

He had always had been a “gas-station knife” kinda guy, and being hard on his tools, usually a pocket knife lasted about 1.5-3 weeks before it bit the big one. As a result, he wanted something quality, and knowing I was a :spyder: holic and a general knife knut, as a result, I decided since I had a few variations of the PM2, so I gave him a deal on my s30V “plain Jane” model (side note: made it about 3 months before I came to the conclusion I had a gaping hole in the collection, and replaced it :o ).

After 2 years of abuse by a heavy handed mason, here’s what it looks like:

Basically, he used, and continues to use it on everything from the usual cardboard/zip tie/wrapper slicing, prying open various cans/pails, and a whole manner of scraping/chipping etc.

Notice the slight damage to the tip/G10 ;)

Usually, after a couple weeks, he has me clean it up and sharpen it... but I can’t take credit for this homemade recurve someone did on it somehow... apparently, when I was out of town on business, he let someone who claimed to be a “pro sharpener” do his to the blade.

But you know what the cool part is? After breaking it down, cleaning it, and throwing it all back together, it still flicks, open and closed, and the compression lock locks up tight, with barely and play after all that. One of the reasons I continue to buy :spyder: ‘s,(in “somewhat abnormal amounts” as my girlfriend puts it :o ) and why Julian has in the meantime acquired an Endura, Domino, and 2 Cara Cara’s.

Pm2 models are the only Spyderco knives I have that I will not sell. This thread is reason enough. Nice pics

I don't have any Spydercos in that condition, but I'm working on it.
Always good to see one used as it should be.

If you use the tip as a screwdriver eventually your wish is granted.

Not nearly as bad as I was expecting.

I had one that looked sorta like that years ago, not quite that bad, it still had it's tip.

I'm constantly craving pics of spydies used and abused. Thanks for scratching that itch, very cool.

That settles it, the tip is the weak part. :P

Two years and still working well, versus three weeks for the cheapo knives. That’s 34 times as long, and counting. Seems like excellent value for price paid.

The PM2 is one fine knife. It is not my favorite because of my hand size, but I have gifted them to people and have recommended them often. The PM2 is obviously up to demanding tasks.

I'll never understand those kinds of people. It's so easy to carry a multitool or something else to pry with. Maybe his next knife should be a Salt, the tips are super strong on those and the steel is plenty tough to pry open paint cans if he insists on using the wrong tool for the job.

I"m that guy that normally likes to see well used knives, but something about this just seems very very wrong.

It's not the wrong tool if it's lasted 2 years and is still functional.

I'm surprised and impressed that it's held up as well as it has!

I feel this is the result of a good knife meeting bad knife habits. What would kill a gas station knife in less than a month has been shrugged off by the PM2.

While I am bad about it as well, a knife is designed to cut things. If used to pry or twist things apart, it is the"wrong" tool for the job.

To better understand this, take out your phone. Now it could be used as a hammer to drive in nails... But there are probably more specialized tools for that job.

I would imagine a crowbar will pound nails everyday for the rest of your life but that won't make it the right tool for the job will it?

The first time he gave it back to me after the tip disappeared I Felt my stomach turn...To me, abuse like this is fascinating, because while I use some of my :spyder: ‘s hard for sure, never would I ever do the stuff he does with his... for example, the gouges on the handle were from wedging it Between two bricks to shim something temporarily. Never have I thought to do something like that.

I think part of me knew that this would be the eventual fate of it when I sold it to him, having known him for a decade, and seen the state of his tools which are in surprisingly good condition... seems they are because instead of running to his truck/tool box for the proper tool, he uses whatever is on his person at the time, which takes the abuse.

At least he’s learning though... he practically babies his Domino now, or at least what one would consider “babying” for someone who does this to a PM2 ;)
