Stolen package after warranty service

#1

Post by archangel08 »

Well guys, our worst fear on warranty service has become a reality.

I recently sent in two of my PM2's for warranty service. Nothing really too wrong with them, just wanted the get the stripped screws replaced.
One was the Cru-wear sprint run... The other was the blacked out version.

Shipped in with package insurance; marked as delivered today after being serviced by Spyderco. After a little discussion with UPS their driver claimed that he did indeed leave it at my front door. I've been home all day, no knock, nothing. Talked to someone at spyderco and they are going to open an investigation with UPS. (always let the shipper open an investigation with the shipping company btw).

Even if Spyderco and UPS work things out between them, my sprint run in Cru-Wear is gone. I assumed shipping it with insurance would ensure they would sent it back with a similar protection - this assumption is on me.

My best hope is that UPS replaces my PM2's with a currently available product but I'm worried this is overly optimistic and they and/or Spyderco are going to write the whole scenario off after the investigation is finished. Either way, a thief has my sprint run, my most beloved in my collection of what used to be five PM2s.

It's great Spyderco has such an excellent warranty. I live in a great area and it's unfortunate but it looks like I'm out on my favorite knife because of shipping. Pay caution to my experience and make sure if you send in your knife to be serviced you are willing to be without it... potentially forever. :(

I told her I was an ED pharmacist, first time I played the "I'm a Dr. Card" - she didn't realize I work as an ER specialist and thought I only sold erectile dysfunction medications.

Welcome to the forum, and I'm sorry for your loss. Porch pirates got quite the score today!

It frustrates me that they don't even knock on the door. Are you considering putting up a camera? If it becomes a frequent occurrence, maybe you could have your shipments sent to a local UPS store. I just had a package with a T-Mag come from Austria, and I took no chances. As soon as I saw it was at the post office, I intercepted it before it went out for delivery. The postal worker huffed and puffed about having to go in the back and find it, but I was not about to have it stolen after waiting 3 weeks.

On a side note, I watched a UPS driver toss my last purchase (Pingo from Amazon) in the snow like it was a frisbee. First world problems.... :)

Man that is lame I can't believe they didn't send it insured! Also very lame that UPS didn't knock, did you check any of your neighbors houses maybe he put it here by mistake? One time I had a package delivered by USPS and I watched him put my package in the neighbors box so I called dispatch and had the driver redeliver to my address. Sorry for your loss man that really really sucks.

I hate this whole package on the doorstep thing we have these days. What is to stop thieves, really? Just free stuff right out in the yard. Feel freakin' free!

That really, really sucks. I am afraid of this happening to me as well, so any time I deal with UPS, I log into their web site and have the package redirected to a UPS store so I can pick it up rather than risk having it come to my house while I'm at work. In my experience, the delivery time is usually a little faster too, presumably because UPS put a higher priority on commercial deliveries than residential.

Thanks for the warm welcome fellas. Here is to a brighter future and content posted on the Spyderco forum. I still have these to keep me safe in case the porch pirates try to become room raiders (or maybe just to smile about thinking of spring time camping and open packages with this time of year in Chicago  )

Welcome archangel08! Sorry to hear about your issues. Man I hate thieves! Hopefully your knives somehow turn up.

I'm from the NW Chicago burbs but currently living in TX. Looks like you guys are getting some more snow up there. Enjoy! :D

UPS and FEDEX drivers are notorious thieves -- long before the rise of the lowlife "porch pirates". This is why a non-FFL can only ship a handgun via Next Day Air (Red Label) or Overnight delivery via UPS and FEDEX. Too many handguns were stolen by their drivers as pistol boxes are easily recognized.

You can easily remedy this problem by having the packages put on "will call" status at the local station. It does mean you have to pick up the package in person, but at least you have piece of mind.

USPS employees frequently pinch and pilfer packages, too. Recently, I had two EDC tools stolen from a package of twenty by USPS. Someone working inside USPS tore a small hole at a seam of a Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope and stole a silver and a black item. I picked up the package at the counter and noticed the suspicious hole. After photographing the tampered package, I immediately ripped it open in front of the USPS clerk and counted the 18 (9 silver and 9 black) items in front of him. I also showed him the packing list which showed 20 items were shipped. He actually went in the back and retrieved a silly stamp and stamped my package, "RECEIVED Damaged" (more like "damaged" in transit) and gave me a number to call. The short of it is that the company refunded me for the two pilfered items, as they did not have the time to file a claim with USPS.

You know, you could enroll in Amazon's Key program and allow strangers to enter your home to "deliver" your packages all safe and sound...

Therefore, one ought to follow the wise, the intelligent, the learned, the much enduring, the dutiful, the elect; one ought to follow a good and wise man as the moon follows the path of the stars.

I had a bad experience with UPS recently. I was waiting all day for an Amazon order that was out for delivery however it never showed up. In the evening I checked the tracking and it said it had been delivered. Obviously the driver just marked the package as delivered and then went home expecting to deliver it the next day. The next day, I stay at home all day waiting and again the driver doesn't show up. In the evening I go check my mail box and there's a note "We tried to deliver your package but you were not at home, please go to xxxxx to pick up your parcel". So the driver came to my house but instead of walking up my driveway and ringing my doorbell he just stood there and left a note. So I check the address of the pick up point on google maps that was on the note and there is no store/pick up point there. I send an email to UPS customer service explaining the situation and they tell me my package is actually at a pick up point in another town in a complete other direction and if I want they will have the package re-delivered. So I wait a week for the re-delivery, lo and behold it never comes. Eventually, I had to find time to go to the other town and pick up the package myself, without google maps I would never have found it.

So I think if your package was meant to be delivered yesterday then check again today. The driver's get lazy at the end of their shifts and mark remaining packages as delivered and then deliver them the next day.

If your knives have really been stolen then I guess this is an expensive lesson. In the future don't mess around with your knives unless you have to and if you do then buy good quality torx bits so your screws don't get messed up.

I have a P.O. Box at the post office and get everything shipped there. Part of their service is letting me use the Post Office's street address as my mailing address so I can get deliveries from places that won't ship to P.O. Boxes. They handle all signatures and certified mail. I don't worry about stolen packages anymore.

I hate thieves. I wonder what would be the best Spyderco to use to cut off a thief's hand?

I agree with Timlara. Once i get a tracking number from UPS or Fed-Ex, I call and get a hold put on it at the local hub. I have been at home and seen the delivery guy not knock or anything.

Nah, I think that the Ladybug SE would be best. Would take some time too, might give the thief something to think about. :-)

The no knock thing really bothers me. I hear them drop packages at the door (I hear the box hitting the ground), and no knock, no doorbell, nothing. I have also got the "sorry we missed you note' when I was home (this always happens on friday, so you can't pick up your package until monday), as well as had a package reported as delivered when it was not (which made me believe it had been stolen, there's a thread about it on the forum here somewhere). I've found ups to be infinitely more reliable than the usps, but they all have their short comings.

Anyways welcome to the forum :spyder: , I feel your pain. Hope you don't ever have this experience again.

**** shame nothing is safe these days. As others have said, when it comes to items of value whether it be sentiment or monetary, best to intercept and and arrange a different delivery option, like pick up at their local hub. I can’t speak for USPS or FedEx because I have never done this, but with UPS this works flawlessly. Coincidentally I have a package that I will be picking up from my local UPS hub in a couple hours. Rediuclous that you should have to take this extra step, but I guess it is what it is. Of course this wouldn’t have to be done every time something is shipped, because you would not be liable for a package that is ordered and is never received. You would just want to do this on special occasions such as the one you have described here.

It sounds like there is no replacing this particular item because it is no longer in production or cannot be found and purchased, so as for that, it sucks, and I feel for you. But lets hope that between UPS and Spyderco they do the right thing and replace it with an item of equal value. You did the right thing by insuring it to Spyderco, it was there choice not to do the same on return, or maybe they did. Either way...someone better come through for you. Keep us posted.

Brian...love this saying, I use it all the time. This is why we must keep things in perspective. I mean it does suck to have something stolen, but in the end, when compared to other things going on around the world...not that big of a deal lol.

My UPS guy is a quarterback.. He throws the packages at the house.. Caught him doing it to me.. Told him about it.. Went up the street and did it to the next house.. Filed a complaint.. Twice.. He still delivers here and still a quarterback.. John :)
