Chaparral with upgraded steel?

#1

Post by TomAiello »

What "standard" Spyderco is most like the Chaparral?

I'm dreaming of something like the FRN chaparral, but with the high end "production" steels (S110V and Maxamet).

What's the closest I can come to this?

You could get the UKPK with FRN and s110v steel, though it's a slip joint.

If you're looking for a sub 3" backlock frn model with high edge retention, closest current production is probably dragonfly in zdp189

I have the UKPK s110v, and the DF in ZDP. I actually have two of the DF.

I'd like something bigger than the Dfly, but with a lock.

Maybe I need to try the Native.

Cts-XHP really seems like more than enough.

I really like XHP and would not be excited to see S110V. Now, K390 would be a different thing altogether in a sprint run.

Go for the urban in K390. About the same size, a little thicker, in K390 and often available for between $60 and $70.

The Chaparral is all about its scales. Let's leave well enough alone.

I really enjoy the Chaparral 1. I would love to see one with something like 52100.

Yes, I am not really for a steel change. But, if they did, my preference would be for K390 because I am so happy with my Urban LW. I think this steel could be made very thin like the Chap blade, and still be pretty tough and strong.

I am not as huge of a fan of 52100 as I am K390.

I'd rather see models like the Delica and Endura get K390 and the like.

Thin is the thing about the Chap, blade and handle. I don't think there is another Spydie like it. The Native is relatively beefy, a mini Mini Manix, IMHO.

I'm not arguing for a change in the Chaparral itself. I understand the design philosophy of the series (and at this point I own them all).

I'm just looking for the "closest" thing I can find in Maxamet or s110v.

Why? I'd rather have a design that is exactly what I want in 8Cr13MoV than a design that isn't my favorite with the "best" steel.

It's funny you say that. So many times I shake my head at people that pass up a great knife, everything they wanted, just because of the blade steel.

I would love to see s110v. I'm fan of trying different steels on the same platform, and the Chaparral is one of my favorite Spydercos.

I couldn't agree with this more--from my perspective and use. I like <3" blades because I have small hands and work restrictions. I strongly prefer deep carry. I like knives I can open and close with ease one handed. Don't get me wrong, I would greatly consider something new outside my preferences; however, a lesser steel wouldn't overrule design. Designs last while steels will come and go.
