Do I really "need" a Southard?

It's the camera angle. It can really cool ya. They are identical when you look at them in person.

The plunge lines are very different.

That's enough that I would suspect the one on the right to be fake. Look at how the Spyderco script almost rolls off into the plunge line. That seems sloppy.

The Brown Southard scale that I gave you was off of that knife. It was bought new.

Actually the plunge lines are different. But the one on the right, the blue one is a bit older, and ya know, I dont think I did buy it new.
I know, I think I bought it off a member from this forum. It's been a few years I think.
Anyone else have a couple Southards?

I have the original brown Southard and like it (and Evil D's review was spot on). Everything but the flipping action, which has never been good. It was the first and almost last spyderco flipper I bought (since I also have the Mantra 2 and bought and sold a Domino). I'm not a flipper fan at all, I just liked the rest of the knife (despite the too-thick grind). But the flipper needs to work or the blade is hard to open by just the hole.
I like the Southard enough to consider picking up the black one at the discounted price, but for those who have one - any issues with action? Do I just have a substandard one?

The Black one is a great flipper. At least the one I had was.
And honestly, this new Stainless one flips pretty dang good.

Have you adjusted the pivot? This was the first knife I tried bearing grease in the pivot and it made a world of difference. You also have to be careful not to put any pressure on the lock bar or it will slow down the blade.

Just got my black one mid november but have had the brown one for a couple years now. They're both good flippers, but as of now the newer black model that I have is a better flipper.

Also, for the sake of comparison, I took a photo of the plunge grinds.

So I saw some comments about the flipping action between the two. After seeing most of the YouTube videos I went with the tan because I figure it will wear better the the titanium nitride finish. And I saw flipper criticism going to each model.
Does anyone think the more recently built of either color may be functioning better and that's the real factor?

Also any recommendations to finish out my current spending spree?
