VG-10 vs. 154CM sharpening

#1

Post by dtsoll »

Folks,

Is it just me or can you also seem to get VG-10 sharper on the sharpmaker. I have sharpened a Benchmade 705 with 154 and my new Navigator with VG-10 and the Nav seems to me to be a whole bunch sharper. I'm not sayin it ain't operator error cause that would be more likely than anything else. what do ya think. have you experienced anything like this. thanks for the forum. dtsoll

It's all about the Vanadium. 154CM/ATS34 doesn't have any, while VG10 has between 0.10 and 0.30%. Vanadium is a major player in making a fine-grained steel, which lets it get just a fuzz sharper.

Never underestimate the impossible.

Dt, I have the same thing happen, seems VG-10 responds to diamond sharpeners the best.
Also in the Navigator check the Rc, it runs a full 2 points higher on that model.
If I took all the money I've spent on various sharpeners I coulda bought 10 Sharpmakers instead.
My B/D is soon and that's what the wife is getting me w/ all the goodies.
Bear in mind I chose that over tickets to see the Dixie Chicks at the Bi Lo center
154-CM and ATS-34 are both great steels and I can make all of them shave hair, BUT the VG-10 I can make so scarey sharp the hair just gives up and jumps of my arm .
I'm waiting on a model with D-2 to come out.
Maybe a BT coated Lum in D-2 and CF scales, that would be sweet. Ron

I just got done sharpening my navigator a couple of hours ago using the razor edge clamps and DMT hones.
I have always thought that VG-10 steel got a little bit better edge on it when I was done then my knives in other steels.

Ive found in the past that blades of ats34 and 154cm sometimes do better when left with a toothy edge like from a fine diamond or fine india stone and do not like a high polish which you get from a ceramic fine, also Benchmade usually runs a thicker flat grind verses a thin hollow grind that spyderco puts on most of their folders, try putting a higher grind on your 705

I have had problems getting a good edge on ATS 34 but I think it was because of the grind of the blade. It was a large Wegner.I have had the same problem with the VG10 Mouse.

I learn something new everyday, even though I don't want to. Jeff

Believe it or not, but my 440V millie is about as aharp as my vg-10 calypso jr. Took a **** of a long time, stropped to remove the wire then used the fines for a LONG time with light pressure. Just pops hair no problem.

On a plain edge, it's even for me, but the edge is much faster & easier, but the edge doen't last as long. RKBA!
