Pacific Salt with Pacific Monsters

#1

Post by Surfingringo »

Just a couple of pics of some of this years pigs. You'll see my trusty Pacific Salt, resting in the gunnel of my kayak like always. That knife is bloody and beaten but far from broken. Toughest knife I've ever owned and I'm never on the water without it.

As an aside, both of these fish (to the best of my knowledge) are world records for kayak captures with artificial lure. The first is an 80lb Roosterfish I caught on a 4 ounce jig and the second is a 350 pound Goliath Grouper that I landed yesterday on a 1 oz. tube jig. That one was nearly a two hour WAR and I used the Pacific Salt to cut the leader and release him after such a worth fight.

I also got a record 44lb Snook last month so that's 3 WR for the year I think. I'm not really that into all the record stuff but it's still an indication that it's been a pretty fun year of fishing. ;) Snook pic doesn't have a Salt in it but I'll include it here just for bragging rights. :p

And one more of the Grouper just for fun.

Those are some big fish! Awesome stuff! Meanwhile, last weekend I failed to catch anything - fishing for trout in a small lake in northern AZ.

WOW! Nothing but impressive! Anything even close to a world record is something to be proud of. Congratulations, by the way!

Was the rooster fish a catch and release as well? Big fish to paddle back to shore. Also, seeing that grouper next to the kayak is almost as funny as it is impressive. Thats a BIG fish!

The fight lasted over 90 minutes and ended about 1.5 kilometers from where I hooked him. My entire body is so sore today I can barely walk. It was like a 90 minute non stop dead lift gym session. My body is so depleted today from both the exertion and the adrenaline dump that I’ve been exhausted almost to the point of feeling sick all day. Crazy.

If I remember correctly, you ground down the tip hump on your pac salt. With the size of those beasts, you may need a slight size upgrade. I think you can take this one and grind a sharper tip to your liking? Maybe Sal will make a sprint in H1 for you.

Absolutely beautiful fish.

Do you counter pedal or just ride it out?

Nah, I just fight the fish and let him have his head. The exception to that is when in a shallower rocky area I will use the pedals to drag the fish into deeper water while fighting it as some fish (like these big Grouper) are notorious for getting in the rocks and breaking you off. I did that in the first 10 minutes with this guy but once I had him in a couple hundred feet of water I let him go where he wanted.
