Hello from New Member in SoCal :)

Post by mrchimpy »

Hello~

I'm a long-time lurker and Spyderco owner (about a year and a half) but have pretty bad social anxiety so I tend not to engage in forums. However, I've found this particular online forum to consistently be a wellspring of knowledge and kindness so I decided to finally say hello.

I work in IT/Networking for a defense contracting company so my knives are usually used with boxes, zip-ties and network cabling... not the harshest or most abrasive materials but they'll work down an edge pretty quickly on cheaper knives. Not my Spydercos, of course ;)

These are my three most used (and therefore, favorite) Spyderco knives:
1. Native 5 LW, PE, in S35VN, kept in pocket all the time - My first Spyderco, bought in 2015. I was so impressed with this knife it brought me here to the forums to read more about the background and history of the knife (and the company). It's been a slippery slope since then but one I slide down with child-like glee and wonderment :D.

2. Manix 2 LW, PE, in S110V, kept in my EDC pouch or backpack - I bought this knife in 2016 for the jobs that my Native 5 LW were too small for. All-time favorite knife.

3. Byrd Cara Cara 2 Rescue, SE, in 8Cr13Mov - I bought this knife earlier this year and it's another easy favorite. This is the knife I use when I'm hesitant to use my Manix or Native (which is basically every cutting task at my job). Since the blade is made of 8Cr13Mov steel it's surpremely field sharpen-able. Finally, at ~$23 I'm not at all hesitant to lend this knife to a friend during beach hang-outs or camping trips.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I just spat out this wall of text but either way I look forward to discussing knives, sharpening techniques, steels and everything else Spyderco with all of you lovely people :).

I hope you have a wonderful day :)

EDIT: Can anyone recommend a good small-mid sized SE hawkbill from Spyderco or Byrd's line? I got the H1 Ladybug Hawkbill but realized I might need something a bit more stout xD.

Welcome to the forums! You’re in good hands here, defintly lots of knowledge. Try not to fall too far down the rabbit hole though! :D

Check out the newly released Dragonfly2 Hawkbill, or the newly released Tasman salt 2 hawkbill.

Welcome! You should look at the new Dragonfly hawkbill in Salt trim or if you like something a bit larger, the Tasman Salt. I carry the Tasman as my work knife during summer when I'm hot and sweaty, as I've rusted several other steels just from sweat. It's the perfect size and weight for shorts carry imo.

Hi and thank you all for the warm welcome and for the suggestions! I will definitely look into either the hawkbill Dragonfly 2 or Tasman salt. I think I'm leaning toward the Tasman Salt for more hand-filling ergonomics and overall sturdier construction but we'll see... I'll probably end up with both :)

Also, I have to add one more thing - Being a lefty can really suck sometimes, especially if your native culture stigmatizes left-handedness (as mine does). So when I observed my new leftie Paramilitary 2 as perhaps the finest example of its platform I've ever handled, I was really emotionally touched. I also thought it was hilarious that my leftie paramilitary 2 is quite literally a mirror image to the right-handed models (even down to the printing!!! XD) Thanks to Sal and Co. (or more like Family) for looking out for us lefties :)

EDIT: My apologies I am usually not so sentimental. It's a weird thing, getting emotionally worked up over a knife/knife company.

Welcome to the forum! I highly recommend the Dragonfly Hawkbill. :D (not a Byrd, but still on the low end of the $ spectrum)

Hi :) thank you for the picture and the suggestion. I was wondering, what kind of a grip do you get with the dragonfly when you use the choil? Is it like 3 1/2 fingers? I'm assuming that's why you attached the lanyard?

Also OT but I LOVE my Nitecore Tip. That blue one you have looks really nice! I'm thinking I might go with that color for my brother's christmas present.

I have hands on the small side, and using the choil I can get all 4 fingers on there. Your mileage may vary. The TIP is a great little light, I've got an Nitecore EC11 too, I hardly carry it since I got the Tip. The CRI 2017 version is really nice. I like CRI "natural light" better than the "cool white" bulbs of the standard model.

Here's a few pics

I tried to move my finger out of the way so you can see where it sits in the hand.

For comparison here is the Tasman 1 in hand.

I prefer the Dragonfly over the Tasman, it's a more public/pocket friendly size. The small size and the choil gives you more control (i think), and more leverage/power when you are using the very tip of the knife. If you do decide on a larger knife though the Tasman IS a nice knife, I'm probably going to pick up an SE Tasman 2 before the year is over.

Welcome aboard!
I also vote a Tasman, it's a very nice, ergonomic and moderately sized hawkbill for hard work, use and abuse in a pocketable package.
