Calling all Canadians - Canadian knife discussion

#1

Post by Jazz »

If Sal were to make a Canadian knife, what would you think or like it to be? Let's start discussing it.

I don't know what model it would be, but how about red with a small maple leaf carved in the handle? I'm thinking a 3" blade.
- best wishes, Jazz.

Not even being Canadian, I like the idea of a maple leaf carved into the handle. Subscribed.

I was thinking about starting this thread too after Sal suggested it in the USPK thread, thanks Jazz.
This is pretty wide open considering the knife laws here, there isn't anything driving a specific requirement like the UKPK. Definitely a locking blade, maybe a back lock? But should be something easily opened and closed with gloves on, it can get cold in the winter. For the same reason no metal handle, I would probably suggest FRN or maybe G10?
I like the maple leaf, but I don't want it to be tacky, maybe the flat spot where the clip sits on the frn could be leaf shaped in stead of oval?
I'm interested to hear what others suggest.

There should be easy access to the lock and hole, and I'd much prefer the large "oversized" hole. As was mentioned, there aren't many restrictions, so It's pretty wide open. Personally I like things in the 4 inch plus range due to large hands, but I realize many will prefer something smaller. I'd prefer FFG and G10. My description is starting to sound like the Military.

How about a folding variant of D. H. Russell Canadian Belt Knife?

I have always loved the shape and how the belly of the blade clears the knuckles in use...

This was the first knife that popped to mind at the mention of Canadian.

Don't think I have ever seen a folding version of this knife done before...

The ergonomics are really good... although the overall shape does take a bit getting used to...

Maple leaf is a necessity and I like the idea of a oversized opening hole. Maybe rwl34? :)

That Canadian belt knife has always been hideous in my eyes, I have to say, and the grip looks horrible. Just my opinion.

I too, would prefer back lock, FFG, and the leaf under the clip area - not tacky, sounds good to me. Here's an example...

I've been to Canada. Does that count?

I think a good Canadian knife would be pretty good. How about a new interpretation of the Endura?

Do you guys really have flappy heads when you talk?

Seriously though, I think it would be really cool if knives that were designed to comply with different laws in other countries were engraved with something patriotic. Then again some of us prefer little or no engraving on blades, so I wonder if that would go over well with everyone.

I think the simple leaf under the clip is subdued yet could be tasteful

I don't know why but when I picture a Canadian Spyderco I see it something like this..

-Made in Italy (where most slipits are made)
-Red FRN scales (Our national colour)
-Back lock
-Large opening hole (for gloves)
-3.5 inch blade
-Stainless steel (for the great outdoors)
-Subtle maple leaf logo, perhaps next to the Spyderco bug on the blade, like on the em Pingo and bb urban
-Negative blade angle like the belt knife above and below
-Leaf shape blade

Image

I don't know that there is a specific knife design that is purely Canadian. So maybe a knife designed with Canadian Spyderco fans in mind would be more fitting?

Alternatively, a small run made in Golden with the same design I've mentioned above but with bright red g10, comp lock and made in Golden sure would be a winner. Similar in the way that Spyderco made the Wolfspyder. But I'm sure that's a long shot as the golden factory is pretty busy.

That's pretty much what we look like, Dave. :p

Absolutely, on the subtle maple leaf, either on the handle or blade.

No negative or positive angled blades for me, though.

Should it be an existing model, or entirely new?

The blades need to be made out of old hockey skate blades from canadian NHL players.
The handle needs to be maple wood.
Roots needs to collaborate on manufacturing the sheaths using one of their quality leathers.
There needs to be no maple leaf. Or the hole should be leaf shaped.

The knife blade should be from 75 to 87 millimeters long, Canada uses the metric system :-).
Absolutely no negative blade angle. Positive blade angle only if very slight.
Back lock is good.
Should have a choil.
Perhaps a Native or slightly larger.
Handle of G10 or FRN with an inlaid metal maple leaf sort of like the inlaid Spyder on a Centofante 3. The silver colored inlay may be too much bling for our subdued Canadian tastes, so perhaps the alloy used for the inlay could be the same as used for the Canadian dollar coin. A bronze alloy.
To emphasize our brand loyalty a Spyder logo could be tastefully engraved on said maple leaf.

non canadian here, but...
this sounds like the perfect excuse/opportunity for the first sprint run of the manix2 back lock :D

G10 in the canadian red may not be possible since it seems like they like to reserve that shade of red for trainers
maybe a maroon color? or some other variation of red
maple leaf engraved under the clip area
a steel we haven't seen or used in a while.... hm

i'd buy one regardless of steel, the new m2 bl is absolutely superb (at least my piece is!)

Interesting. I'd say red anyway. It's our flag color. White is too, but that would get a bit cheesey, I think (red and white).

I think the red is generally held in reserve for the trainers, but Sal might make an exception. Even a red front scale and white back scale could be very cool. But i am a fan of red or white G10.

Sal or someone from Spyderco has said they're no longer reserving red just for trainers, so a red Canadian knife should be possible.

I do like the idea of a red Canadian Manix backlock.
