Para 3 name change?

#1

Post by Holland »

Anyone else think Para3 might become confusing if spyderco ever CQI's the Paramiliatry 2? Then there will be two Para3s??? :D

I know there was a thread on this months back (which I can't find), but lets see if we can think of anything better.

Do you think spyderco will change the name if we can find something better?

How bout:
-support
-storm
-ridge
-specialist
-fuze
-charge
-stealth
-pioneer

Clearly I need help proposing new names :o

Ok, they probably should have called it the Para 75mm instead, but would having both a Para 3 and a ParaMilitary 3 really confuse people?

Charge no, taken by Leatherman
Pioneer no, taken by Victorinox

It's kinda like a Caly. We have Caly 3.5 and 3. I think possibly the word "urban" could be added at the end of the name to show that the knife is more acclimated to stricter knife laws in cities. So maybe "Paramilitary 2 Urban" etc, etc..

It is the same with the Temperance.

The Temperance 1 and 2 are the two fixed blades with the 2 being the second version yet the Lil Temperance 3 is a small folder who's name represents it's blade length. If the fixed blade is ever revised again there will be both a Temperance 3 and a Lil Temperance 3.

It seems as though sometimes the number represents the blade length and sometimes it represents the evolution of a model.

Nope! There were several of these name threads prior to it's release. Spyderco ultimately decided to go with Para 3. Why would they confuse things by changing the name at this point?

CQI changes are typically smaller less complete model changes than the Para 3 is. I wouldn't consider such a significant change in size to only be a CQI change. It was also said somewhere here that the 3 isn't considered a smaller version of the 2, it stands as it's own model. It does get a little confusing when you consider the original Paramilitary which by number you might think should be the largest.

Lol that was a good read, that's exactly what I was talking about.

I think it would have been better to just call the para3 "para" instead

Given their naming history, para 3 is about spot on.

There's probably more, but the only other family I can think of with this naming method is the caly 3 and 3.5.

The paramilitary isnt called PM3.5
The military isn't called military 4
The first delica wasn't called delica 3
The first police wasn't called police 4

Etc.

I still think it should have been the MInuteman. I remember it as one of the earliest suggestions I read, and it's still the best in my opinion.

Well you have Military, and then the Paramilitary (now on the second iteration). The Para 3 could have been called the "Paramilitary Mini" or "Paramilitary Short" i guess.....but it isn't a Paramilitary 3 because that name will be reserved for a third iteration of the Paramilitary. What fighting force is a step down from a Paramilitary? Militia? Clearly their intent was to give this one a different name and then attach the blade length to it....something they did not do on the military or paramilitary. But without a doubt, the Para3 is the little brother of the PM2....so they wanted to keep its family name similar. Knifeworks needs to change their listing info b/c it calls it the Paramilitary 3.

I hope the folks at Spyderco read threads like this and feel good. We love their products so much that we get into debates about the finer points of naming logic.

I’d propose a new nomenclature.

Model [bladelength].[generation]

For example:

Para 3.1
Endura 4.4

Or maybe for non-Full integers you could do:

Endura 3”75.4
Endura 3.75.4
The first time I saw a Spyderco was the early 90s at a knife shop in a mall. I can still see the SpydieHoles through that glass display cabinet. My parents wouldn't buy any of them for me... so now I buy them all. :spyder:

Sal called the pm2 military Jr. in another thread. So I guess the pm3 is baby Millie :p
Millies in S110V, CTS-204p, REX 45, PM2/S110v, Native 5/Maxamet, P4/K390, Pacific Salt SE/H1, UK PK
Wants/Wishes (only NIB and EU): Militarys in 52100, Maxamet, Cru-Wear, Manix 2/Maxamet

Didn't the Military just go through CQI without a name change? Why would the Paramilitary 2 be any different?

They'd be mad not to and I think those are some very nice names but I'm inclined to think some may already be used by other companies but I'm not sure.

Anyhow, I think Alex is also a very nice name.
