To clip or not to clip?

Postby JMC » Sun Feb 23, 2003 1:00 am

Of all you spyderco fans, is there anyone who prefers to remove the clips and just carry in the pocket? If so why and what models?

I personaly prefer the pocket carry. I would rather have to take an extra few seconds to grab the knife then loose it.

Knives are one of mans oldest tools..........not just weapons!!!!!

I allways carry mine cliped in my front right hand pocket and have never had it come out by its self.Well only once and it was a plastic clip in shorts and I was on a rideing mower.Something about that mower would push things out of your pocket no matter what.

I learn something new everyday, even though I don't want to. Jeff

I have one that I removed the clip from. I carry my Titanium Lum Tanto Folder in a Gary Graley custom sheath - image below. I changed the lanyard that Gary supplied to a black rawhide fob - but that's the only thing I would change. If you want a change from pocket clip carry, Gary's sheaths are works of art!!! If you want to see some more examples of his work check out this link:

The clip is one of the features I like most at a folding knife therefore I wouldn't remove it. On the contrary. I'd put a clip to the clipless spydies like the Ladybug. Jester or Kiwi.

I once lost a Benchmade knife I had clipped to my pocket while I was mowing the lawn. I looked all over a 10 acre parcel for the stupid thing. I knew if I didn't find it by looking I'd find it with the mower. After about an hour and a half I was about to give up and accept my loss when I found it hanging from a branch. I must have brushed against it hard enough for it to grab the clip. I had to remove the clip and bent it back in shape but at least I wasn't out the $ I'd spent on the stupid thing.
Since then I've been leary.

Yes and no. When carrying the knife in my shirt pocket, then yes. Otherwise no.

Clips are very handy and for the most part I like them. However, latley I have been thinking about removing them from my Benchmades but I think I will leave the clip on my Lum folder for a while. The grip on any of these knives seems to be somewhat better without the clip.

I prefer the clip on mine. Just something about being able to grab it without digging in the pocket.

I usually clip except when at class or at church. Any other time, the clip works great.

I couldn't see taking off the pocket clip because it defeats the purpose but this is just my 2 cents worth. I usually get IWB sheath to put my knives in and sometimes wear them around the neck in the very same sheaths

I like the way the clip positions a Spydie for easy retrieval. The other benefit I've found is that the clip really assists in the purchase of the fingers of the hand that is thumbing open a Spyderco knife. You can tell that they have been designed with this in mind. I find it far more difficult to open one once the clip has been removed, as the other fingers of the opening hand tend to slip across the handle instead of catching behind it; particularly when trying to "flick" open the blade.

OK more questions?....... Where do most people prefer to clip. Does anyone have any probleums with loss or things getting caught on the clip and pulling out the knife unexpectedly?

I'm re-thinking my clipless preference.

My truck's seatbelt buckle did a job on the clips of a couple of my best knives which were clipped in my RH jeans pocket. One of these was a small Sebenza. I now carry my Spyderco's clipped inside the band of my jeans except for the Dyad Jr. which lives in my watch pocket.

I haven't LOST a spydie that was clippd to my pocket, though I've had them fall out when getting my wallet out. I no longer carry my wallet in that pocket.

I clip to all 4 pockets, as well as carrying IWB, neck, and boot. Though not all at once. Today I've got both front, back left, and neck.

I have the clip off my navigator. It is in the bottom of my right front pocket.
This lets me carry a second blade (meerkat)in the same pocket by using it's clip.

I tend to be happy with clipping my s to my R/F pocket, but I almost had a heart attack the other day at work.

Somehow my new VG-10 Endura SE fell out of my pocket and was laying there on the floor. Luckily, I saw it there before someone else had picked it up. Now I carry it, with clip still intact, in my right rear pocket without using the clip.

Clipped for me, but if I ever get another Q, I'll remove it. RKBA!
