Optimum hole size(?)

#1

Post by AllenETreat »

To : ALL -

Here's one I believe has been

overlooked. If We look at Our <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

catalogs ( if ANY of Us have'em ) We

see various hole diameters : from the

8.5mm on the Tim Zowada to the 14mm on

the Military model. Now, I know blade

size has alot to do with it ( but then

again, look at the Salsa ( 14mm as on

the mili )) The question is : which hole

size do you "forumites" find optimal?

I find the 14mm best as one can "catch"

the smallest part of the thumb with it

and follow through with the rest of the

thumb. I believe this is the reason the

Military & Salsa are popular amongst

Spydie owners/users. Or does size matter

to any of you?

The larger the better for me. (14mm)
I found the one on my Wegner Jr. much to small, but a larger didn't fit that blade profile.

I don't no what the optimum should be, but the Dragonfly & Calypso Jr. are to small. That's my only complaints about those two little gems! RKBA!

6'2"

That way I can do a backflip and kick with my feet on the hole and flop that big old blade open. Of course the whole blade would be ~32 feet long. This makes it tough to put in your pocket but with spandex, anything is possible!

I like the 14mm more. Perhaps 14mm with Cobra Hood are best, but I haven't handled them yet.

Not sure what the size of the one on the Chinook is, but that's the one that's perfect for me.

I like the larger Spydie opening holes on the Military and Chinook, but I'm not sure it has to be quite 14mm for my purposes. I believe a 13mm hole or larger would be my preference. Mainly though, I much prefer the designs that leave the entire Spydie-hole exposed, as opposed to those that don't. In some designs, part of the whole is covered by the scales.

Size does matter!
Thats a tough one, I prefer the larger holes but on some of the Spydies a 14mm hole would be way too big and obtrusive. I do agree that the holes on some models could be bigger(Shabaria, Dragonfly)

I think they(R&D team) do a great job of figureing out the ideal size per knife. I don't think any are undersized for the knife, as they allow the easy opeing we have all come to enjoy.

that said, I love the 14mm size hole, but the 'fly size one works too.

For me, the optimum size is the 14mm <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Hole on the Millie, Salsa, Blue Rescue. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Vamp, Just to stir up the discussion, I really think the hole in the Wegner Jr. is undersized and too small for the knife.
But then again, I believe that knife was made by engineers in Seki-City and not by Tim Wegner and/or the crew in Colorado.

It really makes no difference to me. I suppose the optimal size would be the one on the G-10 Harpy, since it's the knife on which I learned. Muscle memory and all that. But, really, I find it very easy to open my Ladybug, and I found it veyr easy to open my Military.

That's part of the beauty of a hole. You can mess up the design of a thumbstud, or a thumb disk, or a flipper, or even a pocketripper -- but it's awful hard to mess up a circular hole. Very few variables.

Vampyrewolf - that's my understanding

from Mike @ Warranty & Repair when We

discussed it months ago. JamesA, you're

on the money! A hole is pretty hard to

"do" wrong ( love my Merlin SE<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>)

I was also tempted to say the "bigger the better". Yet, after toying with the Chinook (BTW, Zrexxer, it has a 14 mm blade hole, just like the Millie), I have second thoughts. I find the 12 mm of the Delica or Native quite suitable for my hands. Of course that if you wear gloves things are different and it depends not only of the hole but also of the overall size and shape of the knife.
Speaking for myself, I usually design my knives with a 13 mm hole, I think it's the best compromise.

In general, on "humped" designs, I think 13mm is the minimum I find comfortable.

14mm is better.

However, on "scale cutout" designs, a 9 or 10 mm hole actually works.

If you look at a Tom Mayo TNT, you will see he makes a very deep scale cut-out for his thumb-slot design and it is very effective, even though his slot is about 11mm deep only.
