Optimum hole size(?)
To : ALL -
Here's one I believe has been
overlooked. If We look at Our <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
catalogs ( if ANY of Us have'em ) We
see various hole diameters : from the
8.5mm on the Tim Zowada to the 14mm on
the Military model. Now, I know blade
size has alot to do with it ( but then
again, look at the Salsa ( 14mm as on
the mili )) The question is : which hole
size do you "forumites" find optimal?
I find the 14mm best as one can "catch"
the smallest part of the thumb with it
and follow through with the rest of the
thumb. I believe this is the reason the
Military & Salsa are popular amongst
Spydie owners/users. Or does size matter
to any of you?

I like the larger Spydie opening holes on the Military and Chinook, but I'm not sure it has to be quite 14mm for my purposes. I believe a 13mm hole or larger would be my preference. Mainly though, I much prefer the designs that leave the entire Spydie-hole exposed, as opposed to those that don't. In some designs, part of the whole is covered by the scales.

It really makes no difference to me. I suppose the optimal size would be the one on the G-10 Harpy, since it's the knife on which I learned. Muscle memory and all that. But, really, I find it very easy to open my Ladybug, and I found it veyr easy to open my Military.
That's part of the beauty of a hole. You can mess up the design of a thumbstud, or a thumb disk, or a flipper, or even a pocketripper -- but it's awful hard to mess up a circular hole. Very few variables.

I was also tempted to say the "bigger the better". Yet, after toying with the Chinook (BTW, Zrexxer, it has a 14 mm blade hole, just like the Millie), I have second thoughts. I find the 12 mm of the Delica or Native quite suitable for my hands. Of course that if you wear gloves things are different and it depends not only of the hole but also of the overall size and shape of the knife.
Speaking for myself, I usually design my knives with a 13 mm hole, I think it's the best compromise.

In general, on "humped" designs, I think 13mm is the minimum I find comfortable.
14mm is better.
However, on "scale cutout" designs, a 9 or 10 mm hole actually works.
If you look at a Tom Mayo TNT, you will see he makes a very deep scale cut-out for his thumb-slot design and it is very effective, even though his slot is about 11mm deep only.
