Please tell me this will stop

#1

Post by William »

Just bought my first Spyderco; a plain DF2. I had to decide between that and a G10 version. Being new to the brand, I opted for less expensive. Now I am looking at a G10 because I like it so much.
I find myself fiddling with it quite a bit. I don't actually use it much but find myself just wanting another.
Then I started reading about the Native 5 Maxamet and have wanted a US made knife. Now not sure if I want that steel or a G10 version.
My main EDC has been a Ken Onion Ripple and I just wanted to upgrade. It looks like I stepped in quicksand.
Anyway, wanted to say hello to all and hope to decide soon.

My condolences.

I have bought dozens and dozens, feel guilty and sell most, then start building up again. In a few months I will be back up to my guilt threshold and off they will go to the blade forums for sale.

It's a sickness, incurable, and you are about to embark on a wild ride. Wait till you learn about sprint runs....Oops, I went and said it.

Thanks. Kinda' what I thought. Just trying to decide on the Native; Maxamet or G10....
Definitely going for the G10 Dfly. Love that little thing. He really thinks he's a big guy.

It won't stop...
I started out wanting a diverse collection of knives.
Fast forward ten years and it's all Spyderco for me and the collection is most certainly not getting any smaller!

We, have Spyderco.

Welcome!

As long as it's not hurting you, enjoy the buying & selling! From personal experience, don't choose less expensive one (remove it from the equation). Wait a bit for the fund to build up ;)

Also after going round up to M4, S110V, I'm trying again 8Cr. Design & execution is what counts if one doesn't use it daily for work (like some here). Blade steel will be useless without ability to sharpen it, and if higher sharpness all the time is your thing, 8Cr, VG10 or H1 will suffice.
(Haven't tried all steels but quite a few).

Enjoy the ride!

Stop? Ha! Good luck with that! :)

As far as the Native 5. You can't go wrong with any of them IMO. I'll probably end up with the Maxamet version at some point just to try the steel but, in the mean time, I'm perfectly happy with the S35VN versions. I have both the LW (FRN) and G10 and I like both just fine but I carry and use the LW more for some reason. I find S35VN performs nicely for my needs and it's easy to get sticky sharp. I also have N5's in S90V & S110V but I find those steels are kind of overkill for my needs.

Enjoy those Dragonflies. The DF is another favorite of mine.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Spyderco!

Sorry, the condition is irreversible.

You can treat the symptoms by promising to only buy sprint runs and the rarest steel, but in the end your knowledge of the existence of Spyderco is going to tax you almost as much as the government does.
Once you reach critical mass and sell off half of your collection, with dozens of knives remaining, then the condition goes into a less aggressive state, but you'll still be fighting in vain to keep your eyes away from the yearly catalog every November.
