Re: Native 5 Maxamet is out also!
So far it has lived up to the hype. A nice dense steel that cuts aggressively and has great edge retention (the blade is heavy to the point you'd swear the maxamet native had liners when you pick it up, it does not). Really hard to scratch too. I hear it cut's glass and will shave pieces off of lesser knifes. :D Sal says "I'm enjoying mine. The Golden knifemakers did an excellent job on this one. exceptional piece.", what more do you need....?murphjd25 wrote:How are you guys liking this Maxamet? You know the drill...talk me into it lol
It removes red wine stains from carpets, it finds loose change, it is the first, last, and best product you have ever needed or will ever need, it will help you with your taxes, cures heartburn, it will make excuses for you when you're late....

Ok I couldn't take it anymore and I need to go to bed, so I ordered one haha! I couldn't resist not trying out Maxamet and needed my first Native 5. Goodnight spydie friends :)

Lulz Sorry! :D
I'D feel worse about enabling you if I didn't know you were about to get a sweet knife. I've bought three N5's in the last four months. I got my first Native 5 in December when I stumbled upon a deal too good to pass up. That knife lead me to give the 40th Anniversary a try in March, which convinced me I loved the Native 5 platform (and linerless CF). The Maxamet so far seems like the heavy use edc I've been waiting for. Hope you like it as much as I do :D

The pressure got to me too. I saw this one at my local gun shop and snatched it up.
Great price too! $135

It may well be my favorite Spyderco and just may need to buy a backup. One can hope that Maxamet becomes as ubiquitous as vg-10 or S30v in Spyderco's line up, at least as the upgrade steel.

Speaking of the new Native Maxamet has anyone really examined the back, curved part of the blade. It's as smooth and slick a bearing surface as I see anywhere in the knife world currently. Very well ground and finished. These guys continue to move up and forward.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure it will patina eventually (not a bad thing really), but I haven't had any problems with rusting or pitting and I use it on food. I rinse the blade off and dry it with a paper towel when I'm done and I take care to keep the pivot dry, but blade wise corrosion hasn't been an issue as of yet.017 wrote:I've been debating whether to get one or not for about a week now. Being non-stainless, was was hesitant, but I just caved in. My preferred dealer was out of stock on both the S35VN and S110V, so that helped to sway me, too.
This Maxamet seems interesting. I'm primarily worried about corrosion, but as a (purportedly) wise man once said, "You don't know until you know". Soon I'll know...

What is best way to keep pivot dry? Canned air?

It gets a patina quite readily, maybe 90% as quickly/readily as M4.
I can take pics of my Maxamet manix up against my GB2 as comparison, both of which were purchased at the same time and used about the same amount.
Re: Native 5 Maxamet is out also!
Just keep the pivot lubed and if it's exposed to water, spray it down with WD40 (the WD stands for "water displacement). I grew up, near the ocean, using pocket knives made from 1095. While the blades occasionally developed surface rust, there was never any issue with the pivots because we kept them well oiled.JerryIsAlive wrote:What is best way to keep pivot dry? Canned air?

Its been a long time since a plane edge knife has gotten me this interested.
I wish they would make it in serrated.

DIY select a size

It doesn't show up very well on camera, but in the right light you can see a little patina. Loving this steel.-Matt a.k.a. Lo_Que, loadedquestions135 I ❤ The P'KAL

Funny, I was just looking at that earlier today. Very impressive to me. I wonder if that is one of the qualities of Maxamet in addition to high level of craftsmanship of the Spyderco makers? The Mastiff wrote:Speaking of the new Native Maxamet has anyone really examined the back, curved part of the blade. Re: Native 5 Maxamet is out also!
I don't think so. In fact I'd guess it's the opposite with the extreme carbide abrasive wear resistance. It's harder to finish than most others. I believe it's just the quality going up as time goes by. The last knives I've bought also were aligned perfectly and the grinds on the edges have been noticeably improving. Mine are so accurate I'd guess it's CNC and higher tolerances overall. Obviously I could be that lucky too but that would be unusual. :)Funny, I was just looking at that earlier today. Honestly this caught my attention beginning back with the 52100 Millie and Cruwear PM2. Since then everything has been eye perfect and straight. Fitting and action has been great on everything. Eric should probably treat the cutlers there at Golden to a a Pizza dinner or something. They have really picked it up IMO.

So, working in a humid environment where I'm splashed by salt water might not be the best place for a Maxamet Native?
