parang and golok

#1

Post by sam the man.. »

Fellow Spyderfolks...

Meet my parang and golok. These are traditional Malay blades which are used everyday from the paddy fields to the jungle.. its considered the ultimate cutting tool among the natives here.. tempered and ground from vehicle spring steel, these goloks can last for a lifetime.. its also very cheap.. about US$20 each. Or cheaper if they are not ornate.. Mine are handmade by a craftsman living some 250km away from me.. it has exotic hardwood and buffalo horn handles.. what do you think?

WOW!
Those are very nice. That guy does some very good work. How much time does he have in making one of them? Now samo you need to create a web-site for him to sell his knives to us americans and the both of you will get real rich!

Hi Samo,
Does this knifemaker take orders? I really like the one in in Pic.2.
I have seen those types before, but never in this class. The sheat looks more US than traditional Malayish.... Am I wrong?
Thats is a very nice set<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>!!
Vox.
BTW, This is Feb!!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Very nice, and a different bent from what we're used to seeing here.

I find it fascinating though that while we're here mired in pedantic discussions of the benefits of particle metallurgy steels, the knives that are out there in hard daily use are made out of vehicle springs.

Think we take our hobby a little too seriously sometimes? <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Howdy Vox!

The knives are actually pretty cheap. Since they are cannibalised from vehicle spring steel, the cost is pretty low. I had mine customised to a certain thickness, length and buffalo handles on pic 2 for less than US$30. The sheath, is of course, custom made by another craftsman..

The Cool ~ Nah, I've hardly seen any parangs and goloks in exotic metal

Ken ~ the name "parang" [pah'rung] and "golok" [goh-loke] are Malay for long blade and curved cutting tool.. Nah, I don't think its profitable to market such tools on the net 'cos it consumes time and quality is never consistant..

Thanks Samo. I didn't mean exotic metal, I meant the "exotic hardwood and buffalo horn handles"....but you've answered that one.

Thanks a lot <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

oooh! Sorry about the confusion Cool! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Well, custom "hulu" or hilt in Malay, had to be supplied by seperately.. Buffalo horn can be scarce and tropical hardwood are hard to come by.. <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> But if you have the resources, it ain't gonna cost much..

Bampot Samo -

NOW THAT's A "knife"! I likee the

curved one ( golok?), would probably

be a good accessory to my EnduraHawk!

If the EnduraHawk terrified the

"gangbangers" types I had the "run in"

with, just think if I pulled a golok

on them!<img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Nice knives indeed. Which one is the Parang and which the Golok?
Allen, if you want a really scary knife, check Laci Szabo's page (szaboinc.com). There's a thing there called the UUK (Urban Utility Knife). Check also the Military UUK or the Mini UUK. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Not to mention the Warscythe or the Tanto Khukri (!) Then come back and tell us what you think <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
