Wharncliffe Delica, is it perfection?

#1

Post by MichaelScott »

Seriously. I know that's not an objective question by any stretch but personally I'm thinking it might be close. For me. I have three Spyderco knives. I've bought many, used them, thought a different one might be better for my purposes, sold them, bought others. Finally, I settled on getting one Spyderco for my three categories of folding knives: small, medium, large, which are Dragonfly 2, Delica 4 and Gayle Bradley 2. Nice, but there was always a little nag in my consciousness about the Delica. The blade shape. The edge profile with the gentle sweep and that little step in the spine at the tip, well, I felt that wasn't quite right for the varied tasks I wanted in my medium size knife.

Then the Wharncliffe was released. I have always liked and appreciated that design. Had a few long ago and found they were versatile and extremely efficient and effective. Given that I feel the ergonomics and construction of the handle, lock and materials on the Delica 4 are as good as it gets, coupled now with Wharncliffe blade in VG-10, I ordered one and put my Delica 4 up on eBay.

My expectations are high but I think they will be met.

Perfection? Probably not, but that gap will be seriously closed this week.

And switch out your Delica 4 FRN Grey handle onto the Wharncliffe blade(and sell the old Delica with the black handle). That would be a good looking Wharncliffe; different from all the others!

...and what's the designed purpose of that blade shape? I could never understand its intended use.

You will not be disappointed, I'm sure. I'm not biased, I just really like how it looks, and especially how it performs.

Its blade shape helps it to not slide off the thing you're cutting as much as one with belly will. The straight all the way to the tip edge stays cutting. Great work knife for cardboard, banding, etc. great shape to get under the banding to cut. Nice point. Not too thin. Not too thick. Also, just ask Micheal Janich, great SD blade shape. Excellent thruster, excellent slasher.

I don't think any knife is perfection, by the way, but this one is really cool and useful, and as you said, efficient and effective. In case you missed this...

But seriously, no matter whose head it came from, I'd still feel the same. I just cut a ton of boxes and mine's still smokin'. I love it.

I'm carrying the serrated version. It's working very well. No rust and I'm in a humid area. Part of the beauty of VG-10.

Yes, I'm a VG10 fan too. What are you cutting with the serrated version?

Today at work, the same girl who borrowed my old work knife asked if she could borrow my "tool". She was opening a box and cutting the flaps. I said, "This ones new". She said, "Wow, it's sharp. Do you sharpen it?" Pretty cute, I thought.

Yet to grab one, but it's a must have for me. It's a wharnie and it's a Delica, an absolute no brainer.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Will there be a wharncliffe Endura? Small knives get all the blade profiles!
And no, the upcoming sheepsfoot Caribbean is not the answer. No one knows the size, and the tip in that shape is way less effective.

Can't talk about Delicas and perfection in the same sentence until they give them a handle that fits my hand ;)

Everything else about them is perfect, I'll give you that :D

Mine is now. I took a page from Jazz and swapped out the scales from my D4 Zome and it looks great. I'd post a pic but this is the only fourm that keeps telling me the file is to large on any of my pics from my iPad2 or iPhone7. Oh well :) well I got a pic now :)

I've been looking forward to your opinion, bro. It is your fault, you know, that I was pestering Sal and all.
