Paramilitary and Military with thicker blade and Saber Grind: Yes or No?
This is not intended to look down on the current design of the Millie and Para Millie whatsoever, it is just a thought stream about possible changes or options in the lineup:
To all Millie and Para Millie fans and users and collectors: Do you think it would be good for these knives to be made with thicker blades and saber-grinds, say even if the same steel was used, and same G1-0 handles? Or do you think they are perfect as is, and if someone wants a knife of that size and basic shape with saber grind, they should stick to the Endura and Pac salt models?

Re: Paramilitary and Military with thicker blade and Saber Grind: Yes or No?
I have came to the conclusion that I prefer the FFGs 95% of the time. I'm sure that saber and hollow grinds serve a lot of people for hard use applications, but in those times I think I would prefer to be using a fixed blade. I still have folders that have them though. I like them, but more often than not, I reach for a FFG.
Just my opinion and I'm sure that other people would disagree.

No thanks to changing it to saber grind or any grind other than FFG. The Manix 2 eventually became FFG and is better in my opinion that way.

I'd like to see them a little thinner, tbh. Absolutely no to thicker blades and saber grinds.

I agree the FFG works for me nine times out of ten. With the choices of blade steels available you can't go wrong. :)FullCircleHook wrote:I have came to the conclusion that I prefer the FFGs 95% of the time. Same here. FFG and distal taper are amongst their best features.Bodog wrote:I'd like to see them a little thinner, tbh. Absolutely no to thicker blades and saber grinds.

Older Military models already had thicker blades compared to current ones.
Not a lot, but definitely measurable.

If the PM2 were thinner than it is today i wouldn't dare stab it in a loaf of bread for fear of the tip breaking :)Bodog wrote:I'd like to see them a little thinner, tbh. Absolutely no to thicker blades and saber grinds.

Kind of hard to picture a Military with a saber grind in my head- I'm just so used to the FFG profile.
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

NO!
They are already perfect as they are!

I would like to see another option in the military lineup. How about a grind that makes for a stronger tip? I wouldn't say no to a Military with a "Janich-like" grind, but still have the same overall blade length.

I would rather see the FFG ground so that it is even thinner behind the edge. My millies and paras are generally about 0.025 BTE and I think they could go lower... maybe 0.015-0.020.
Re: Paramilitary and Military with thicker blade and Saber Grind: Yes or No?
Thicker blade and add an extra inch while you're at it.
I actually bought a K-2 when they came out and it took about 30 seconds to realize how much I miss having a scale covering the back of the lockbar.
Somehow that knife was much more difficult to manipulate than most other framelocks as well.
Anyway, I'm all in on a bigger Millitary, but not with a different grind. I'm not wholly opposed to different grinds on other models, but on the Military it would just feel wrong.

Certain blade shapes and designs lend themselves to working well with a saber grind. The Millie and pm2 are not among that group IMO. Another no from me.
Re: Paramilitary and Military with thicker blade and Saber Grind: Yes or No?
I absolutely loath saber grind so no thanks.

Regarding the distal taper to a fine tip: that is a very useful feature of the mili / pm2 design. Improve tip strength with tough steel (cruwear, m4) but the grind is already highly functional! Nochange is warranted. For a more robust tip on a longer blade, get a tatanka :)

Re: Paramilitary and Military with thicker blade and Saber Grind: Yes or No?
Keep them both flat ground but switch to 3mm stock. The flat grind and distal taper make that thicker blade stock work but I would much rather have thinner knives. This is why I almost always grab a Stretch over a Para2.
Outside of fixed blades i don't have much use for saber grinds.

They are perfect as is. I have no idea why anyone would want anything other than ffg. And the blade stock on both models is plenty thick for me.

I like the blades exactly as they are. I do not like saber grinds except on a knife for splitting joints on a hunt.

No for me, too. It's already been explained why in a number of excellent posts.
