hey all, have a CF police in SE on teh way. thinking about using for EDC. am wondering about SS model. i have heard peaople praise the police, i'd like some feedback from fello <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>nuts/ those smitten with the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> virus. where are it's weak points and where does it shine? thanks for the help guys (and gals <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>)

thing is, SS ( especially when wet )
can make for a slippery surface to
grip. <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> could improve on this "wheel"
by adding rubber inserts. Don't think
they ever will though. You'r better
served with the CF Police, IMO.

I'm sure others will chime in with their pros and cons but one of the reasons why I like the ss Police is "durability." I'm the type of guy that likes steel shafts on my golf clubs (irons) even though graphite shafts could give me a slight edge in performance. Why? Because when I'm having fun or am under stress I don't have the time to worry about the shafts being dinged or dented when inserting them or extracting them from the bag. (A ding or dent in a graphite shaft could enlarge and become a weak point and, as a result, could cause the shaft to snap at an inopportune moment).
I'm not saying that a ding or dent on the CF scales of a knife would compromise the integrity of its strength--if anything, at most it would be only a minor cosmetic flaw. However, it would bother me to see that ding from day after day (but that's just me). So if the knife is an EDC (that I may drop or ...err, misuse) I may opt to use something other than a CF scaled version. This is not to say that I wouldn't use a CF version knife once in awhile or on special occasions for showing off.

I've carried the same SS Police SE every work day since 1988. My only nitpick with mine is that it has squared edges- New Police models have chamfered edges. It still locks up as tight as new. I had mine engraved at a gun show. That took care of much of the grip problem. IIRC, there is a company called Checkermarx that does very grippy checkering on stainless knives. I'm waiting for mine to wear out so I can get another one and have it checkered... I think I'll be waiting for a while. Get one! You won't be sorry.

SS Police PE was my second Spydie, the handle is a bit slippery when wet, but the strength of the SS makes up for it.
I find the Police very sleek and smooth in operation. I just recently cleaned and lubricated it and it was just like it was brand new sooo smooth in the opening. Almost made it back into EDC rotation. An excellent blade.

Well, I got my CF Police today (#151 RH PE!) and if it's grip that worries you, the CF Police won't help you much.
The carbon fiber on this model isn't matte or textured like some of the CRKT's etc. It's under a beautiful gloss resin, and it's every bit as slippery and smooth as the SS model.
Now don't get me wrong... I LOVE this knife! It's my first #'ed Spyderco and without a doubt the most striking and beautiful of the 16 I've got in my collection now <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

A stainless fully-serrated Police is one of my EDC's. This is a good, stout folder that feels very substantial in my hand. I solved the slippery-scale problem by putting Agrip on the non-clip scale, but I'm still thinking about gluing-on some G-10 scales on top of the stainless scales...(Sort of like a G-10 Police with THICK dual stainless liners.).

Of course Spyderco could end your grip problems by producing more G-10 Handled Police. This would be even easier than making the CF Police because the CF Police Is practically identical, except for the hazardous scale material, to the original G-10 Police!

I posted awhile back with thoughts on this G-10 over s/s Police idea. Wouldn't that be great? The whole point for me is that the S/S by virtue of it's strong S/S scales can be slimmer, and has that wonderful heft so why not apply some ultra thin pieces of G-10 over the existing S/S scales for grip improvement? The G-10 police was/is great, but the G-10 had to be quite thick for strength. If it were applied and bonded directly to a S/S scale, it seems it could probably be very thin indeed, yet still provide the grip advantage.

glockman99 and Jeff/1911, why stop at G-10? While we're wishing for aftermarket stick 'ems why not wish for other veneer materials (e.g., exotic woods, MOP, abalone, textured rubber, etc.). Wouldn't that be a hoot!
In a post long ago on a similar topic someone gave a link to a company that actually made aftermarket add-ons for some Spydercos (I think the add-ons were made of pewter).
