I'm so excited that Spyderco will release a lightweight/FRN version of the Chaparral. It's my favorite Spyderco, by far. Does anyone have an estimated availability time-frame for this beauty?

I must confess, I thought the idea was ridiculous. It's already light, slim perfect EDC without being FRN... Largely ignored the thread discussing it.

After I saw the low res prototype pics, it started coming together for me... It's a Taiwan Delica with XHP and as an FRN lover I am ashamed of myself for not realizing it sooner that above all else it's FRN because it's an awesome handle material!

This and the Q Ball are what I'm waiting for.

Edit:

And the Wharncliffe Delica. I forgot about that one.

I've been reading its praises since I got on board, but the Chaparral has never been on my shopping list almost entirely due to cost. Maybe now I'll get a chance to see what you guys are digging about it! Though does it have to be black? I could see this guy in a nice white or off-white. I'd totally be into that!

Bumping, so we don't lose site of this upcoming product. I wonder if we have any chance of seeing this by summer of this year?

I didn't know about this one until the SHOT show thread, and then i wanted one. I hope the price is decent, it should be a great EDC.
I think Sal said the tooling wasn't even started, so it may still be quite a while before we see it.

I read the same thing, so not expected soon. It's all good (to me), there is what seems liked an endless stream of new Spydies being released consistently. New/upgraded models, surprise Sprints and Exclusives (like the K390 Urban and Damascus Endura 4 LW). Plenty to keep us occupied until the Chappie LW drops :)

Me too. But I expect it to be 2018 at the earliest.

Agreed! I vote ivory.

It's not a common color in knives, and this may be a good place to start using it.

I don't know about ivory/white, it might be kinda cool, but I would like something other than just black.

Deep Navy or Indigo blue, or very dark charcoal grey. It needs to be a bit classy looking, not garish.

As long as I'm dreaming make it the s110v blue color--and make the blade s110v to match. :)

I hope it's not all the way out until 2018. I have no issue with a standard black FRN offering.

Sal, do you have any updates your can provide concerning the FRN Chaparral?

Looking forward to this one as well as the RN Chap.

Would really like to see better picks of the frn texture. The screen-grabs I've seen from the SHOT show vid almost looks like the fishscale and volcano grip patterns had a baby.

Wouldn't a FRN Chap be very similar to the DFly? Just different steels

Yes similar but the Chappie is just enough bigger to make it a little better for me. Don't get me wrong, I think the DFs are great too. I've neen carrying one at work a few days a week and either a Chap or Urban on the other days. They're all fit nicely in the watch pocket of my blue jeans.

Looking forward to adding the FRN Chappie to my growing collection of smaller knives.

I don't think so. Different feel, better blade shape on Chap, larger hole, fills the hand better.

YMMV......
