Hello, CRUWEAR in the kitchen

#1

Post by Babalu32 »

I have just joined but am quite familiar to this forum and spyderco.
I was chopping up various veggies for a beef stew, and noticed my Cruwear PM2 was discoloring and giving off bright red streaks. I think I narrowed it down to the carrots of all things.
The streaks were small and cleaned off with some rubbing. I did my best trying to capture it in pictures.
Nothing i was cutting was red. Is this some kind of oxidation of cruwear? Anyone elses cruwear bleed?
Also included my collection.

Welcome to the forum!

Could possibly be blade metal contamination from the grinding process?

And no, I have not had this issue personally with my Cruwear. Both my Military, and Manix 2 have remained surprisingly stain free, other than hazing over a bit.

(By the way, how is your clad stainless on the Delica so dark?? Did you etch it to be a similar finish to the core steel?)

The delica was etched with etching solution, its vg10. I nail polished the edge as to protect it. Turned out ok, not great.

I strop my knives with black and green compound, but that wouldnt turn red i dont think. Just a
funny occurance I thought Id throw out there.

I also etched the s30 PM2 up top, came out nice and uniform grey.

Ah wow, thought it looked like a lamination line at first glance!
Neat finish on that VG10!
Now that I look back, it looks like a reverse hamon! :)

And, I actually meant from the factory grind. The belt may have had particulate from another carbon steel, or exposed more from other Cruwear and that got ground into your blade?
Just speculation on my part.

I get those marks from slicing yams too, so I'm pretty sure it's just food (carrot) residue.

Carrots will stain my chef knives pretty good. Turns then reddish orange if I cut enough. Does wash off. Welcome, by the way.

Yes, i did chop up a big sweet potato. Thanks for the welcome :spyder:
Glad i found a cruwear pm2. Only had it for a few days.
Also noticed some CQI compared to my old PM2:
Blade tang where detent ball rides is polished
Slightly thicker blade stock
Notch ground in tang to allow detent ball up on the tang when closing
RED LOCTITE

The first job my Cruwear PM2 was used for was to cut up two dozen lemons and limes. I gave it a quick splash under the tap when I was done and was impressed to see that there was no discolouration at all. One slice through an apple stained my Caly SB. I haven't tried carrots though...

Yeah, I have to admit, I'm not much of a carrot guy, although I'll eat no problem it if it's already in a dish, but I don't chop my own...

But I do really like sweet pototo, especially satsumaimo.
