Caly3 HAP40 Green G10 Sprint Run

#1

Post by Bdubs808 »

I would like to thank all of you Forumites who called for the return of the Caly3. Also thank you for advocating HAP40, it is an awesome choice. Thank you Spyderco crew for listening and bringing it back, in G10! I have a preorder in with KC, and I'm very excited to line this one up next to my Super Blue Caly3 and ZDP189 as well.

I'm excited about the Caly 3 HAP40 as well! I got my pre-order in with KC last night. I've almost pulled the trigger on a couple different CF/ZDP Caly 3 but really wanted a G10. Glad I held off now. I like everything about this sprint run, steel, color, etc
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

This is, with absolutely no doubt, a must-have sprint! Really hoping the green G10 they chose is close to the forest green used on the Golden 204P PM2 and checkered forum N5. :)

I didn't get in on the HAP 40 Delica or the SB Caly so this is a must have for me. Price looks reasonable too as I thought it would be around $150 so $129 works out well.

Thanks Sal and Spyderco for listening :)

This is a big deal for me and this knife will easily be in my top 10. We like to have fantasy thread where we come up with our dream knives and this is a dream come true for me. On top of that the price point is very attractive. Man oh man this one is exciting!

How does Hap40 compare to M4 and ZDP189 in edge retention and toughness? I have the original Caly3 in laminated ZDP, and wonder what Hap40 brings to the table?

I'm no steel expert but I would say in my usage HAP40 seems like the Japanese equivalent to m4. I know the properties are a little different but for use I find them very similar and similar levels of non stainless features.

it brings ease of sharpening, mostly. in my experience, hap40 has similar corrosion resistance, edge retention and toughness to m4. zdp likely won't be as tough because its targeted for a higher hardness i think. its way more time consuming to sharpen, but on the flip side will hold an edge longer. i find my zdp blades to be very corrosion resistant, never once had any kind of staining on em, although i am fairly careful to wipe down after use.

i think what the hap40 brings to the table is overall balance vs zdp. the cladding on it will make it easier to maintain, since you dont have to worry about the pivot corroding and its really easy to get a super fine edge back. zdp isn't for everyone -- personally i love it, i can see how those not comfortable with sharpening will use the factory edge for a while and then end up with a dull, difficult to sharpen blade.

caly3 is an awesome platform and this is the most exciting release for me of the year.

Also the most anticipated knife of 2017 for me. (Unless we get surprised  ) Hopefully there will be a follow-up with the 3.5 which is perhaps my favorite edc. Thanks to all at Spyderco. :spyder:

Really huge, enormous thank you to Spyderco for making this knife. When I saw it first time in catalog, it was my happiest knife moment since announcement of 2013 Forum Native.

I share your feelings about sprint, still get CF/ZDP189 Caly. Few months ago I got one lightly used. I love the knife. At this moment it kick-out G10 Caly3.5 out of my pocket.

It is the same (within specification limits) G10. I am sure. I feel it. Cannot be something different. Sal would never do this to me. :)

+1 Did you place pre-order?

I'm really glad to see this one getting made, but I will personally wait and hope for a Caly 3.5 in HAP40 since I really prefer the longer cutting edge of the 3.5 model.
