Manix 2 Custom Mods

#1

Post by jwrussell65 »

My son is in the Navy and preparing for his first deployment next year. He's coming home for Christmas and I've gotten him the Spyderco Manix 2 he's been wanting (black blade and black g10 scales). I'd like to add some custom g10 scales and titanium back spacer to it to make it more special. I haven't had much luck finding sources for these beyond Amazon and Ebay. Does anyone have a source that has some good options to choose from?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum, I'd try Cuscadi for the quickest turn around, you could also try over on Bladeforums, lots of custom work guys over there.
Happy to be part of this great forum and group of down to earth spyderco addicts, Thanks Sal and gang.

Never seen a titanium backspacer. If I remember right from having mine apart (which I might not), the backspacer is actually part of the lock mechanism, meaning an aftermarket one would have to be very precise, unlike many of the PM2 backspacers you see floating around.

As for the scales, it is definitely doable. I made my own custom scales for mine, and would wager that anyone with a dremel and a little experience in the shop could make their own. I would offer my help but pretty bogged down right now in school.

Here are some I had bookmarked from before that might work out for you. Expect to pay $50-150 for the scales.

Maybe also consider reaching out to knockwood blades. He does good custom work at reasonable prices. https://www.etsy.com/shop/KnockWoodBlades

He doesn't do titanium but Steve Ketchen is the go to guy for after market scales these days. He works with wood, g10, micarta and ctek etc. Now a ctek Manix would be pretty awesome and i'm sure your son would love it.

Agree about the ctek on the manix, but will add that it is one of the more fragile materials (probably comparable to non-stabilized wood) since the resin can chip out of their cells on the edges. I have carried mine for maybe 45 days and not had a chip yet, but after making the scales I saw how fragile it can be. The quality of the ctek will definitely change the durability, but I am not sure how to assess the quality from different sources.

Here is my ctek manix:

Steve Ketchen is a master craftsman and scale maker. Not to put a damper on employing Steve for your Manix mods, but there's little to no chance you'll get onto his books before the New Year. When I spoke with him a few weeks back, he was already looking at projects for January/February. Sorry!

BladeHQ does or used to carry some aftermarket scales for the Manix 2.

Boomer does excellent work, also. I think Boomer makes a no-disassembly required Para 2 back spacer. I'm not sure if he makes anything for the Manix 2.
