Sal, any hope for a Cruwear Native 5 in dark gray G10?

#1

Post by RadioactiveSpyder »

Hi there Sal,

With your recent (and a bit unexpected!) smash hit CPM-Cruwear Paramilitary 2 sprint run, can we Native 5 lovers hope to see this steel with the same dark gray G10 as the PM2 sometime soon? I hope you procured enough of that color G10, it's just great!

Thanks so much,
Radioactive :)

just curious, why a relatively tougher, lower wear resistance steel for a smaller knife? If a carbon steel is desired something like 10V or M4 would seem to make more sense.

Unless it's more just to have the whole Golden lineup in cruwear?

I'm not sure if size is always the deciding factor of how hard we use our blades. I have beat the crap out of my xhp native. The shape and ergos of that design do beg to be beaten on.

I'm in. I don't have the steel or the model. Ok, I did break down and order the Cruwear PM2 this morning, but technically....

I hear you, but either way I know that any N5 Cruwear blade of mine would end up in a G10 frame regardless... ;)

My feelings exactly...I'd still get it but G10 definitely my preference.

Cruwear has better wear resistance than S30V, I do believe (it's supposed to be better than 3V in wear resistance, less toughness). 3V wear resistance is similar to S30V.

Cruwear has better wear resistance than S30V, I do believe (it's supposed to be better than 3V in wear resistance, less toughness). 3V wear resistance is similar to S30V.
Well, for CPM 3V vs CPM CruWear, Crucible's datasheets agree with you that 3V should be a bit tougher and CruWear should have a bit more wear resistance.

CPM CruWear - http://www.crucible.com/PDFs/DataSheets ... 202010.pdf
CPM 3V - http://www.crucible.com/PDFs/DataSheets ... 202015.pdf

And Crucible also puts S30V as slightly ahead of CPM 3V for wear resistance.

CPM S30V - http://www.crucible.com/PDFs/DataSheets ... 202010.pdf

And I know those sheets are all relative with no wear resistance units (though they're present for toughness) and they get used for marketing as much as anything else, but CruWear is in ballpark S30V wear resistance and is significantly tougher, seems to be their story.

This thread on bf and this thread on bf and this more convoluted thread here all seem to suggest that for end-user testing, cru-wear may be slightly behind S30V in wear resistance, but not by much, and close enough that experimental error is probably enough to cover any sort of difference.

So I guess it's more of a step sideways than I had initially realized, into more toughness and maybe ease of sharpening being traded for S35VN's stainlessness, without too much of a change in wear resistance.

I had assumed it was further down the more toughness/less wear resistance curve than it really was; it makes a bit more sense now (though I would still prefer M4, haha).

What I get for assuming, I guess.

(I know the Native5 uses S35VN, not S30V, but you mentioned S30V in particular so I figured I'd just roll with that since the consensus seems to be that they're basically indistinguishable to users.)

Thanks for bringing all of the information in for reference. I think Cruwear, because of its high attainable hardness, will really depend on the heat treat for what sort of edge retention you'll get. Custom makers seem to do well with it whereas Spyderco may be on the more conservative side in a production setting.
