When I met him at last years factory seconds sale, he was carrying a vial of powdered XHP steel in his pocket and talked to me about what a great steel it was. We got on the topic after I asked him about the Hungarian knife. I'm sure everyone else already knows this, but he is a super nice guy.

Not better, just different. I think Sal has made it clear that he is a steel junkie and appreciates most if not all of them. That said, there must be at least one he doesn't like. I wonder what one that is?

I bet it's s30v and vg10 based on the number of models using them.

I would think that he likes the utility of different steel types as much as he values different knife designs for different uses. He's a true steel knut IMO and I hope he remains so.

Sal's favorite steel?

For himself, or for his customers? For what use? In what environment? For the only knife, or one of, say, five knives?

Brain cramp.

Well I know he likes VG-10 a lot because when I had a thread on ATS-55 Spyders maybe two to three years ago he said that they tested VG-10 against ATS-55 and the VG-10 was superior in their tests. And from my own perspective I personally didn't think that ATS-55 was bad blade steel at all. I still rotate and carry a few of my old ATS-55 models and I still like them. Now I will say that ATS-55 seems to be a better steel for Spyderedges than it does with plain edges.

Spyderco has truly given us a colossal smorgasboard of great blade steels. I bet he is probably like most of us>> whereas he probably has a lot of blade steels he dearly likes.

I know he has said he like BD1 as a well balanced steel.

BFK, I think you asked the more interesting question.

I know he often carries new knives to evaluate their performance, but when I met him about a year and a half ago, he pulled a well used zdp-189 Dragonfly out of pocket. I'd bet that was one of his favorites. :)

Edit: It just occurred to me that I think I was wrong about the knife being a Dragonfly. Memory ain't what it used to be. :p I'm now remembering that it was a zdp-189 Manbug. Either way, I know it was zdp-189 and it looked like Sal had frequently carried it.

I don't remember where it was, but I do remember Sal saying that S90V was the king of EDC steels. This was before S110V was tested and there have been others that have come out since. And honestly just because he said that doesn't mean that it is his favorite. It could have meant a lot of things, like it had the best mix of properties for the edc crowd or something. /shrug
