OT : Will you stay?

Oh wow! with a total post of 61015 and 1,977 users, this forum is growing and growing... <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Time changes everything and people come and go. I lost track of the countless number of good people whom I've met on this virtual "home" of mine and had enjoyed the great hospitality and generosity of a few.. Now, having said that and all, my passion for <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s is still very strong.. Maybe someday, I'll move on, but not from this forum.. I know that you folks are the greatest people on the face of this earth and I could have never asked for more.. the question is : will you stay loyal to this forum? Or have you found something else to occupy your time and felt that is time to move on.. *heh-heh!* I for one, is here to stay.. <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Java squinted into the east Texas morning sun as the mist filtered slowly over the banks of the Red River settling into the low lying gullies and washes. He pulled his Stetson low to shade his eyes from the glare and surveyed the restless Double E herd. Whelping over, it would soon be time to drive the eels south again. The anticipated long days on the trail seemed a welcome relief now from the divisive events that had begun here in Spydietown and now burdened his weary heart.

Used to be a man could walk among friends here and share his opinions in civil terms knowing he would be treated in the same manner. Used to be any stranger in town would be made welcome and served up a hearty helping of humor and knowledge that a man could take as genuine friendship. Folks from far-flung corners of the globe had come to call this place home.

Java first heard the tales from enthusiastic Spydermen he met on the frontlines in the waning days of the Cold War and the call had been strong then. He had packed up his meager collection, saved the Spyderco Forum as a Favorite on his browser, and moved to Spydietown. At first he had been content to lurk in the darkened forum halls and listen to the wonderful tales of collector and fans from everywhere. Their enthusiasm united them in a common bond and it didn’t take long before Java was hooked.

He spend long nights at the keyboard reading the exploits of Samo in the jungles of Malaysia. He heard the gentle siren calls of Kahz extolling her mighty Mouse and spinning colorful tales of the gentle sleepy land to the south. Sometimes he could even taste the salt air as Clay described sailing and everyday life in the Land Down Under.

The enthusiasm, the banter, the good natured humor and the civility was a welcome relief from the other forums Java had visited and he soon found himself joining in. Slowly at first but with acceptance and kind words he opened up, settled in, and set down roots. After the early wild days spent surfing during the taming of the internet, here was a place he could give and receive respect and call home.

As posts accumulated like the drifted snows after a blue norther, Java found himself reaching out to friends over the seas and across the Americas. He set up shop and began to export Spyderco knives and related goods to spread the good reputation of Spyderco to those who were too far removed from dealers, down on their luck, or just plain deserving of a good cut of steel. His Double E ranch prospered and soon became a gathering place for forum residents to relax and cut loose.

But lately Spydietown had begun to drift. The off-topic rants, loss of civility within posts, name calling e-mails, and needless warnings a man generates because he has been taken to task on his civil behavior had begun to wear on the fabric of the original bond that brought Java here. He had stood up for innocent forumites more than once but the price he had paid for the last one was more than he wanted to pay. Perhaps it was time to put the old Double E up for auction down at the land bank and just pull up stakes.

Java gave his reins a slight pull and wheeled about as three of the longhorn congers split from the herd and made for a side creek. He bolted to head the strays off and muttered a line from one of them Diehard talkies “****! You ain’t no Gary Cooper and this ain’t Dodge City! Ya cain't fix everything so best just move along fer a mite bit.”

He’d miss the ranch and good times but for now, it was time to move on. Java made a vow to keep in touch with the friends he regularly e-mailed and hoped they understood. There was much to do to get the Double E gussied up for buyers. Time was a wastin’…..

Goodbye, my friends and fellow forumites. It’s been a good ride but ol Java's gonna head south till the climate warms up a bit. Y'all best be watchin' yer Ps and Qs cuz ol' Java will still be out there a watchin'. Bless you all and may peace shine upon you!!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Samo,

I have belonged to so many forums, and I have left so many after losing interest quickly. My seven month absence was due to life outside the Internet, but never due to lack of love for this place. So far, I still feel very comfortable here. Every now and then I lurk, then I post. I enjoy the diversity of topics, the people I've met, the friends I've made. I don't see my parting anytime soon. As long as the place remains diverse, Kahz will be here! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Oh, and Spyderco remains my favourite brand name. This will be hard to beat! <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

This Forum is a great community I'm honoured to be part of. It brought me a lot of knowledge, great friends and yes, joy (not to mention the spidies, he, he) <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. It happens to appear into my life just in time to complete the happiness I already live <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
I'll be back... repeatedly <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I have to agree! I first started out on one of the other generic forums. You could talk about all knives, but I quickly found that they did not really like to answer questions. Sure they would read the post but you would never get an answer. I found the old members talked in a totally different language from the "newbies" I think here we all try to help one another. The Spydie forum is friendly although one thing did bother me though.
I haven't posted in awhile and by no means am I a regular poster. I don't even have 100 yet. I read everything though. I try to help if I can and the more general topics I try to include something to say. I have to slow my collecting down some as I need to start saving for a wedding, house etc.so I am going to post more to stay in the knife loop. Here it is we all tried to make the "what do you do for a living a large topic" but the case of the Rc Hardness Endura has taken over. I was surprised to see that such a thread could take up so much of this forum. Like I said I hadnt been on the forum in awhile due to holiday busy-ness, but I found this hole new tone on the forum. In my previous experience on this site we have welcomed but not condoned bad words to Spyderco. Nothing against Barefoot-Simona but I ask you this question, had she been a guy without all the images would we have put up with this. Just curious? I think she is very empowered to post on such a male oriented forum and the more women on this site would be great! I tend to find most sheeple to be women, not all but most. They give the worst looks when you go to cut something with a Spydie.
I have said my peace I wish all that post, lurk, etc the best as you are on the best knife site on the net. Where else does the owner come on and talk knives with you? It is very friendly here and I have found you can even ask off topic/Spydie questions. I have one but I will post it on its own. I think the "old timers" here have set a very good example and if we all follow their lead this will be THE site for a long.
So after a long winded post my answer...yes I will stay here!!!

My experience with forums is extremely limited – this is the first forum I ever joined – and even now I belong to only three or four. I was looking to replace a lost Spyderco knife. I had been visiting the Spyderco web site, looking through the online catalog for over three years – and had bought two knives through the online store – but I had never clicked on the “Spyderco Forum” link. Last July I did, and after “lurking” (a term I didn’t know at the time) for a couple of days, I joined and made my first post. That actually took a fair amount of courage for me – and what made the difference is that after only a couple of days of reading posts I realized that what I had found here was a community of people who shared a common interest, who seemed to “know” each other and who willingly, even eagerly, shared their knowledge, experience, and opinions, all with cheerfulness and an amazing sense of humor. What made the difference was that although I felt vulnerable, I believed that I would not be jumped on, or criticized for naïve or “stupid” questions.

I was overwhelmed at the response I received. I could not have had a warmer reception at a gathering of my own family. I had found a new family. This is a family forum, a place where family members gather to communicate and socialize, sharing information and knowledge, and occasionally unhappy experiences. A pretty amazing family actually, one that almost always welcomes new members and strangers with open arms. And even when that welcome is somewhat rough, we are open to looking at the whole picture – or many pictures <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> and are not fraid to change our first impressions.

There is a saying that I have seen a lot lately – “Friends are the family you choose.” I have found friends and a family here, and I will be staying a while for sure.

Chuck

Hi Spydie.com.

Hey CKE. An interesting concept that I'm sure a few have pondered. Current thought is;

It's your forum. Some like the focus on knives and learning information. Some enjoy the diversity of conversation and simply enjoy the people attracted to this nut house.

In the end, if the respect levels are maintained, the open mind is part of the attraction. One can choose to read what is of interest.

At this time, we are quite proud that all of you have managed a very interesting, diverse friendly place to visit, and we're glad to have you.

I'll say yes. This is the first forum I've been on that I actually visited habitually, not just for specific info.

I used to be extremely active on several TI calculator forums, but 2 years of college have passed since a math course, so what I know is adequate. I simply don't need to know how to crack the TI-XX to force it to do calculus anymore.

Here, I am delving into something that has been part of my life for years: the pursuit, use, and accumulation of knives. I enjoy them at a deeper level than I ever did calcs- ever try putting a 30 degree backbevel on a TI-83? Not pretty. <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I'll be here. Besides, somebody has to run the SATC! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I learned to respect most of the "old timers" due to their wealth of knowledge and patience.. This is one forum who doesn't treat newcomers with hostility and obnoxiousness.. <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> though many questions have been repeated, the friendly self-moderating forumites did continue to tackle them with extreme warmth and friendliness.. <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

It's the only forum I read and sometimes write.
Don't know what to do in my lunch break without it <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
It's hard to find people anywhere that are interested in Spydies/knifes and here are lots of them and they all seem to be very nice.
That's what counts, I think.

I really enjoy your postings!
