Show me yer bolsters!
Show me yer bolsters!
So I was recently able to pick up a lightly used Sage 4 for a decent price. I always regretted missing out on that model, given that it has the unique and rare (for Spyderco) combo of a natural material and my favorite lock style. I realized when getting it that I was amassing a bit of a collection of bolstered Spydercos.
I know people have mixed feelings about the bolsters, and even "bolster people" are split on the visible screw issue, but I wanted people to show off their bolsters! What do you like/dislike in the bolstered designs?
Also a fun note that my 3 bolstered knives feature 6 different materials: Steel/Micarta, Brass/Carbon fiber, and Titanium/Ironwood.
A second note that you can really see the Kris DNA evident in the Bowie design in this pic. That Kris is a truly special design.

True. I love bolsters, but hate visible screws on them. I used to own Navaja, Delicas and recently Schempps Bowie. All of them gone for various reasons, still have few Persians, Kopas and Caly3. Sorry, no pictures. I am really crappy photographer. :otvenuto wrote: I know people have mixed feelings about the bolsters, and even "bolster people" are split on the visible screw issue.

Re: Show me yer bolsters!
I'm torn on the screw issue myself. I can't deny that they look better without visible screws, but I love having an adjustable pivot. If nothing else I wish they would go the extra mile and use some flush fitting screw heads instead of the standard domed head screws. If you compare that Kriss to the other two it's immediately obvious.
I don't have anything with bolsters at the moment aside from some old slip joints. I sold my Vallotton to a retired officer who fell in love with it. I've been begging for the Kiwi 4 to get the bolster treatment but I'm not sure if that'll ever happen. It seems like the days of knife runs like the Kopa and Kiwi are over.

I love my Sage4. Rock solid lockup and smooth as glass. The bolster does scratch easily but a little steel wool cleans it up nicely.

Ha just a few Persians and Kopas, indeed! No doubt there are many in spydieville who are jealous of that remark.bh49 wrote:True. I love bolsters, but hate visible screws on them. Also torn, the Kris is by far the best looking, but if it developed blade play there would be no fix, as you mention. I think that in general I prefer a non bolstered knife, but in the case of a higher end user, it adds a cool aesthetic touch.Evil D wrote:I'm torn on the screw issue myself. That CF Caly is one of my favorite bolstered Spydercos, I just wish they had went with a different Damascus or a standard blade steel.

Bolster porn for y'all
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

Ha I was waiting for Deacon to show up.
That stretch is probably one of the coolest spyderco pieces out there. I'm not a stretch fan, but if it came in that configuration I would own one. In fact, if I could get spyderco to make me one fully custom knife, it would probably be an R with a similar treatment. Thanks for sharing!

All, except the Micro Dyad. It's from Seki.

Re: Show me yer bolsters!
In a culinary knife, I know that a bolster may be used to affect the balance of the knife.
I the same true in folding knives? Forgive my ignorance, the last bolstered knife I used was a Buck 110 knockoff made by Schrade I had as a kid.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

While they certainly do affect the balance, I don't believe they are used on folders, in the same way as kitchen cutlery. Pure aesthetics.kennethsime wrote: ↑Sun Aug 23, 2020 10:01 pmIn a culinary knife, I know that a bolster may be used to affect the balance of the knife.

Although, I prefer the added heft and handle-biased balance.
