Kopa nut

It's been a while since I last posted - I had (have) lost my giraffe bone kopa which was given to me as a gift. I haven't been able to replace the giraffe bone kopa yet - but, I have gone a little crazy gathering up knives. Along with kopas - I've gathered a few more knives - including a couple of Damascus steel knives - one of which is the amber jigged bone delica. The Delica's Damascus steel is beautiful (as far as inanimate beauty goes) and its a nice size. As much as I like the looks of that D.S. Delica --- The Kopa - IMO - is far and above the best looking gents knife -- I can only see one way to make the Kopa an even better looking Gent's Knife --- I offer for consideration --- the Damascus Kopa - include previously popular scales along with some 'New & Shiny' model scales. I'll take the 1st one of each of the various scales.

We need a Sprint Run of Kopas, for certain.

There are more than several folks on this forum (and elsewhere) who would be interested in a Kopa Sprint.

Count me in. :)

Kopas are stunning. So much interest in a easy-carrying gem of a gentleman's folder. All for more of them.

Wish, wish, wish they weren't ALL so righty biased, though! Still....hope to see a sprint run, if only to see the material actually chosen this time.

I am getting sad, when I read all talks about Kopas. Sal said that Kopa this is not going to happen in any near future.
I do not carry Kopa much lately, but carried Cocobolo last Saturday. It is really nice knife.

probably my suggestion will not make any Kopa a better looking, but i beleive that they will make a better gents knife:
1. No clip
2. No dent on a lock bar
3. 2 mm thin blade.

Great feedback!.. I know there are a lot of Kopa fans out there & I had heard of Sal saying there would be no more. Good thinking on Sal's part - he knows that an equal amount of Kopas put on the market would likely depress the price of the Kopa overall. I would agree - if - Sal were to simply make more of the same 'as before' - but- if the new Kopas were all damsacus - that would seem to open up a new market without depressing the existing kopa's value. Of course - that just my opinion.

The problem with making new Kopas not in depressing market, but inability of Moki to produce Kopas per Spyderco standards.

That would be my ideal Kopa as well, although at this point I'd cheerfully settle for #1 plus either #2 or #3. But as you note in your later post, I don't see new Kopas as likely due to production issues with Moki.

Personally, I'd pass on Japanese damascus, as I've yet to see a pattern that truly impressed me, and Spyderco seems to favor a dark etch that I think accentuates its negative qualities. Still, if all 3 of your conditions were met, I could live with it.

I'd be very happy to see a new Kopa offering, but agree that it might not happen (although things over there seem to be improving!). I think Sal wants to use the Chaparral as the 21st century vehicle for this type of upscale gents folder, but I carry a Kopa several times a week and more often than my Chaps now, so I guess that's a bit telling! ;)

I admit my lack of literacy concerning mfg processes & the who of mfg. Who is Moki and why are they building knives if it is the belief that moki can't build to spyderco standards? 1. they can build non-kopa knives to spyderco standards but not the kopa? That doesn't seem to wash. If you have the time - would you care to expand on your comment? Thanks.

For a long time Moki was Spyderco's premier maker and one of the finest makers, if not the finest production knifemaker, in Japan. Among other knives they've made for Spyderco over the years are the C27 Jess Horn, the Kiwis, the Kopas, the Calypso family, and the Schempp Persians. However, in recent years, their quality seems to have slipped, at least in the knives they've produced for Spyderco. I'm not privy to details, could be any number of reasons. Whatever the cause, the result is an understandable reluctance on Spyderco's part to have them producing bolster and scales models where anything less than perfect fit and finish is most easily noted.

This is about Moki from fairly recent discussion about re-run of original Jess Horn.
sal wrote: We have plans for a Jess Horn "tribute" pc, but it wouldn't be like the C27. The quality of that model could only have been produced by the Grandfather who passed several years ago. The son had a stroke a while back so he's not working and the grandson does not have, at this time, the skills to make a C27.
sal
it sounds like we need to wait until grandson will have skills of his grandfather or father.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you suppose this perception of Moki is shared by Spyderco?

Hi Jerry,

I must say that we have gotten some very nice samples from them recently and so I'm thinking positively.

My late best friend always said that the KOPA was his favorite Spyder. Also I had a couple of lady friends who had me get them two different KOPA models and they both raved about them. It's an ideal EDC for a moderate knife user. It's a bit too small for what I mostly use an EDC folder for but that's why Spyderco gives us such a wide range selection.

I've had more that one person tell me that the KOPA and KIWI models were their favorites. I'm surprised that the KOPA and Caly Jr. didn't become permanent fixtures in the main line up. Because since both models have been discontinued I've had dozens of people ask me where to get either one of those models.

Another small but obscure model I always liked and wish someday they would do a Sprint Run of is the old SPUR model. For a small bladed model it was one of Spyderco's best IMO.
