Knife show in Vegas...are you going?

#1

Post by Xplorer »

I am curious if anyone from this forum is planning to attend the knife show in Vegas Sept 2 & 3. I know the G8 is a show created by another forum, but since Spyderco will be there ( :spyder: :D :spyder: ) I am hoping I'm not offending anyone by asking about this show on this forum.

The reason I ask, is...We have an awesome forum here filled with awesome people. I would really like to meet some people from this forum at the show (maybe even have a beer). It would be nice to put a few faces with the names and get a chance to talk in person for a change.

If you're planning to go to G8 I'd love to start by arranging a time for forum members to meet at the Spyderco booth or something. :D

I wish I could but I'll be tied up that weekend.

I hear what you are saying about putting names to faces. I have met quite a few members of the forum at the seconds sales the past couple of years. Half the fun of the sale is camping out in frigid temps with a bunch of other Spyderco junkies talking knives all night and trying to stay warm.

Since the show is 10 days away now, I thought I would try bringing this thread back up. I am hoping to get the opportunity to meet some of the fine people that participate on this forum at the show. I'll be there all day, both days. If you're going...lets meet up at some point :D .

I will also be coordinating and guiding a little slot canyon adventure through one of my previously explored routes, for those that want to get away from the casinos Sunday morning (weather permitting...I won't take a group to a slot canyon if there's a chance of rain).

Hope to see you there! :)

Nearly every year, Spyderco offers a seconds sale of their knives at the Spyderco Factory Outlet (SFO) in Golden, CO. This sale usually takes place in the Fall (around Nov., IIRC). "Seconds" are knives that have cosmetic and/or other blemishes that are not sold at regular retail price. It is a great way to get user knives at a reduced price. It's a first come/first served event, but Spyderco also sets limits so that most folks have a fair shake at buying a knife they want. :)

Hey Chad,
I would really enjoy attending the G8. Unfortunately, I will be taking some classes during that week and won't be able to go. :(

FWIW, that slot canyon hike sounds like a heckuva good time. I've been to Zion and Bryce once before and really had an amazing time. The beauty of nature out there trumps slots and blackjack every time, IMO. ;)

Bummer! It would be great to meet you Michael! Maybe next time :D .

Yah..I travel to Vegas every 2 months and I prefer to spend my free time exploring the hidden beauty that the desert holds rather than feeding my hard earned money into a casino. I've found some really amazing (and shaded :) ) places within an hour or less of the strip.

On the Spyderco side, Eric, Rebecca and I will be attending and manning (or womanning) the booth. Stop by and see us, we would love to meet you and show you new knives.

Thank you Joyce! Without a doubt I plan to spend time meeting and talking with with all three of you :) ... and checking out the new knives of course!! One of my favorite memories from last year's show was having Gayle Bradley walk me over to your booth to show me his new folder. He was excited like a little kid and so was I. :D I'm very much looking forward to meeting all three of you!

Best regards!

Thank you, Chad! :) I think it would be great to meet you too in person. Perhaps some day we'll meet up at one of the shows? I am already planning (or scheming) about attending the Blade Show next year. We'll see!

Hey, those are some awesome pictures of the canyons! Beautiful country out there. I'd much prefer a scenic hike to seeing the Strip again. (I was out to Vegas once in '10 and that was quite enough for one lifetime ;)). My wife and I are planning a trip in the next year or two to come out to see the Grand Canyon again. We plan to hike down to the bottom and back up of the Canyon by way of the Bright Angel Trail. Hey, that should be a good time. :D

Sorry to ramble off topic. I hope you have a great time at the G8! I hear it is a fantastic show. Seeing the Spyderco Crew will definitely be the icing on the cake! :)

Take care,
Michael

Not going to make it as I will be working for the man as usual.....The delights of having to babysit the Chinese Civil Aviation Agency for 2 days. :(
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

Hey Chad, and thanks again for volunteering to be the forum's eyes and ears at the "Gathering". Your mission if you choose to accept it is as follows:

1. Take lots of photo's, I know you can't take pics of the upcoming models but shots of the booth etc would be great to see. Also pics of anything else that's going on would be great as well :)

2. Post "Gathering" forum report, please provide a detailed report thread on the prototype knives you handled (personal impressions, size, weight, potential usage etc) and any important bits of news you can squeeze out of the crew (note: waterboarding is illegal, however it may be overlooked if you get some juicy gossip :p)

3. Have fun!

This message will self destruct after reading.....errr, we seem to be experiencing some problems with the self destruct button :D

Day 1 of G8 has been amazing, as expected! :D The doors opened at 10:00 AM and I began making my way to see every booth in the show. I entered every lottery available as I went. The show is filled with awesome knives and amazing people ready to talk about their creations. I am once again blown away by the friendliness of all of these great folks!
Image

After walking from booth to booth and attending every auction for the day I was literally 3 booths short of seeing every booth at 6:00 when the show was ending for the day. I never even got time for a lunch break because, between the big stage lotteries and the small "beep-beep" lotteries they were happening every 30 minutes. As I write this the next morning....I freakin' tired! :p ! But it's the good kind of tired...the kind where you've seen so many awesome knives that your tired body lays awake for a couple more hours thinking of all of the awesomeness :D !!
Image

Of course a highlight of my first day was my visit at the Spyderco booth :spyder: :) :spyder: !! My favorite company is filled with great people and it is always a pleasure when I get to spend some time talking with them. This time I finally got to meet Eric! I've been blessed in the past to have spent time with Sal and Gail but had yet to meet Eric. He, like his parents, is a great person to talk with. He was happy to talk about all sorts of Spyderco stuff and I even learned about upcoming Maxamet models that I found exciting :D !! Of course, I held and played with EVERY new knife on the "prototype" table  . Sorry, no photos allowed :( . OMG!! There's a lot of cool stuff being considered for the future! I gave Eric my opinions about the few I liked the best and I spent extra time closely inspecting the Para 3 :D ;) .
Image

Today I will take more pics and hopefully I'll have more time tonight to post them.

Oh yah...I almost forgot..I won 2 lotteries so far :D :D !!!
I got this Jonathan Mcnees Dixon
Image
Image

I also won this Starlingear cobalt bead..

I'll have a more complete photo summary for you tonight or tomorrow.....Wish you were here!

Thanks for sharing. I have wanted to go for years, but it always seems labor day weekend is the worst timing for me. Maybe in the future.
