Spyderco copies

#1

Post by Jsd »

I notice that there are several companies who are selling their own branded knives that look exactly like Spyderco knives. Has Spyderco's utility or design patent expired? I'm just curious how the company handles these situations. Imitation is the highest form of flattery except in business.

There are outright fakes all over, is that what you're talking about? Or are you referring to some Benchmades having thumb holes?

There's a high number of companies who are producing fakes, replica's and clones of several Spyderco models. There's a separate part of the forum dedicated to discussing these knockoffs.
http://spyderco.com/forumII/viewforum.php?f=8

These companies are mostly based in China and don't have the same level of integrity when it comes to the laws we have around patents.
This doesn't just go for Spyderco's or knives in general.
They're copying everything from flash drives to entire cars.
If you need some info on this, check the link above ;)

And you're right, on this level it isn't flattery anymore. Nobody here likes to see the clones being sold because the quality is lacking and many people bought one assuming it was genuine. This in turn causes Spyderco to get bad rep for something they didn't even manufacture... It's nearly impossible to stop these people sadly...

An eagle has talons.
We, have Spyderco.
