Where would an AEB-L knife likely be made? If Golden, then Native LW. If Seki, then Dragonfly 2 or G10 Delica.

See Sal's quote I posted directly above yours.

AEB-L is a European steel made by BU, so Maniago is probably the best/least expensive option for doing a run in this steel. Looks like an Urban is either a possibility or already in-the-works.

Gotcha, yeah, thats what I figured. They use K390 in Seki and M390 in Golden, so I guess BU steels can come from anywhere. Im not really interested in non-locking slipjoints, so I guess Ill have to hold out hope for something like a Native LW.

I hope the blade length remains the current 2.6" and not 2.5" as was originally planned. Right now it hits the sweet spot of 2.6 to 2.8 of my preferred slipjoint pocket knife blade length, just barely.

Hey Doc,

I think the plan is to leave the Urban at 2.6" and not move forward with the 2.75" Metropolitan due to feedback to leave the Urban as-is. But based on what you wrote, the Metro may be even more to your liking?

Here is the most recent post from Sal on the topic that I can recall:

Hi Jazz,

The Metropolitan was a 2.75" Slippie that was to use the DKPK handle, but we ran into some sizing problems in that the Urban, which was supposed to be 2.5" ended up 2.6" which was too close to the 2.75 Metropolitan. So we' have to reduce the Urban to 2.5" before we can make a 2.75" Metropolitan. But in discussion here, there was push back to making the Urban 2.5".

sal

And here's a pic that shows the Spy DK/Metro scales with the Urban and UKPK:

I can't say that I really need a 2.75" slippie along with the other two, but I like the idea. Seems like sort of a waste to not do something with the molds.

A little off-topic for this thread, but a flash batch or straight-to-sprint Metro might be a cool way to use the molds and keep the Urban at 2.6". I bet a brg Metro in Elmax or dark blue/M390 would sell like hotcakes, especially if they were "limited." :D

I am all for a Metro. at 2.75" in would be nice. I see room for it in the lineup. Look at Case, Buck, and others. They have slip joints in different and in the same designs that have close blade lengths.

I registered here just to post my interest in this.

I'd love to see a Spyderco folder in AEB-L, provided that it takes advantage of AEB-L's most notable strength: the ability to take a stable edge at a very narrow angle, with a very thin grind behind the edge. The geometry must be right, and the heat treat must be hard or nothing is gained from using AEB-L.

Since 14C28N was mentioned, I think it's important to point out that 14C28N cannot achieve the same yield strength / edge stability that AEB-L/13C26 can. I'm no metallurgist, but I've read this is because it isn't possible to cryo/heat treat away as great a percentage of austenite. There probably isn't a big difference between the two when heat-treated poorly for high-volume manufacturing, but I expect Spyderco to do better.

An Urban would be OK, though with thinner stock, I think the UKPK would be better. A Chaparral would be awesome. I would buy any of the three. I just picked up a new UKPK drop point in BD1N from the factory store in Golden. It's the only knife model I've ever bought two of (the other was in S110V; it vanished from a checked bag). Can we make it three?

Welcome to the forum Zak.

The Urban will be the test bed for the steel. If it's well received, I assume additional releases would be possible.

A UKPK in CTS-BDZ1 would also be pretty sweet. Golden production, similar performance...makes me wish the Caly 3.5 LW was Golden production.

I'd love to see any new UKPK variants, especially in G10.

I'd like to see the Urban dropped down to a 2.5" blade so it's legal in cities and other jurisdictions with that blade length restriction. That would also make room for the 2.75" blade Metro.

Regardless of what happens with the Urban's blade length, I'd like to see it or the UKPK become the new Mule. I never bought a Mule because I so rarely the fixed blades I have that aren't kitchen knives. I use a folder daily, and I'd give up the locking blade to have the chance to try a variety of steels.

Hi Zak,

Welcome too our forum.

Right now the only AEB-l model in-the-works is the Brown Urban.

The brown is going to be nice. I hope it is not UPS brown, but coyote brown.
