Rags to Riches Knife Choice

#1

Post by dreadpirate »

Ok - if you were at this moment broke and you wanted to get a Spyderco - which one would it be?

Now let's say a month later you strike it rich - which (currently available) Spyderco would you get then?

For me; rags would be a clipi-tool with a bottle opener. A very useful knife for what you pay.

Riches would be, hmm, Chaparral Blue Accent Stepped Titanium.

I just love that Spyderco has so many choices for so many budgets.

Well the knife on my most wanted list at the moment (that actually exists) is the 52100 Military. If I were to strike it rich I would definitely get a Nirvana, but without a doubt I would talk to Sal about commissioning my own exclusive, I'd get a dealer license or whatever I needed to make that happen, then I'd see about having a carbon steel Nilakka made, maybe in 52100 too.

Riches: Mamba. Definitely.
Rags: Byrd Cara Cara 2.
Extremely Rich: Would pay Spyderco to manufacture an entire series of Salt Knives personally designed by Lance himself, as well as produce a "Caspian Salt II".

I'm in...

Rags: Byrd Meadowlark 2 or Crow 2

Riches: Native 5 Fluted CF or Nirvana

The beautiful thing about Spyderco is that there are so many good choices at both ends of the price spectrum.

This sounds fun!

Broke I'd get a used Delica, but if new is the rule then I'd probably go with a Persistence.

Rich, I'd get everything, but to pick one it'd be a Mamba. I'd have no specific use for it other than it looks cool and is probably tons of fun to play with, which describes most of the items I'd acquire with sudden wealth.

Yeah it would cost something like $70k or so because you'd have to buy the entire run and then resell them. I've never heard of anyone doing it but if a person had the money and wanted to take on the risk of selling them all, then you would just need a dealer's license or whatever Spyderco requires you to have to make such a request. If I had Bill Gates money I might just keep the whole run for myself and never need to buy another knife for the rest of my life lol.

Nice unique thread topic!

Rags: Delica 4, it's all the knife you ever need.

Riches: An original "R." I have the solid blade sprint, and the nishijin sprint, and I absolutely love the design (it's like an upsized Delica with a choil). I'm always on the lookout but have yet to find one for a reasonable price.

I like that someone thought of commissioning their own exclusive.

Rags, Tenacious. Riches, Nirvana.

If I became well off enough I would become a member of the collectors club.

If I ever became truly wealthy I would probably become an online Spyderco dealer and commission my own exclusives. Kinda like BBS but I'd do it a little differently lol.
Most recently acquired: Military 2, Paramilitary 2 Tanto x2, YoJUMBO, Swayback, Siren, DLC Yojimbo 2, Native Chief, Shaman S90V, Para 3 LW, Ikuchi, UKPK, Smock, SUBVERT, Amalgam, Para 3 CTS-XHP, Kapara, Paramilitary 2 M390
Grail Paramilitary 2 M390 X 2! ACHIEVED!!

I'm not rich, but I can afford any Spyderco I want right now. That said, the Delica and Stretch are two of my favorites. I don't really think that would change if I won the lottery.

For the sake of the thread though, I guess I would say the upcoming Bradley Tac1s on the high end. :)

On the low end, bang for the buck..I like the Centofante III, ...on the high side, I've pre ordered the 52100, 40th anniversary, and the Nirvana...but the one I just can't justify, or seem to pull the trigger on is the Lum Tanto sprint at Bentobox Shop, so if I were rich I'd order a couple of those I guess.

This is too easy....... :D
Rags, would be ordering a Blue Stepped Titanium Chaparral, and charging it on my credit card.
Riches, would be paying off the credit card and being happy I got the Blue Stepped Chap.
Nothin' to it. ;)

I would probably get a Delica if it were rags (or a Meadowlark Ti if I were completely destitute). If I were rich I would probably commission a small run of Native 5 Ti , 3.5" blade with a mid back lock and some unique steel.
